anyone know the real story about ethanol?

i know that too much of it (i.e. volume per litre) eats at your fuel lines. does anyone know the actual facts, or can someone smart enough actualy ask one of the fuel suppliers

its all i use now. i use boost 98 from united petrol stations. ethanol burns better/more efficiently than petrol, also provides higher octane, and its cheaper!

only a few subaru models arent supposed to use it. b4 is one of them.

Ethanol doesn’t provide more Octane. Both ethanol and Octane are two different molecules. My opinion is to stay away from it and I get the best performance out of BP's 98 octane. When I have used the ethanol version from United I have a bad run compared to the others.

But yes it is fine. Some cars now can run on a lot of ethanol e.g. The Spain' cars (Can’t remember the manufacturer) are designed to be able to accept 4 kinds of fuel to beet the bouzer. They have no problem producing there ethanol fuels because of there massive Sugar Cain industry.
There cars are specifically designed for a large sum of ethanol % in the fuel and have no problem running it.
However the good olde' fossil fuels still run the best. Too bad about there long term effect sad

yeh, the 98 stuff you use alexx was betta then the normal 95 octane, but i still didnt think it even matched the 'normal' 98 stuff. im just being a little baby because of my new jap spec ecu to be :hunter:  and being a student in business managment, i can forsee petrol being added with ethanol to cut the costs to the business (which ofcourse dosent mean itl be any cheaper)

Re: ethanol...

It doesn't just rip sh!t out of your fuel lines but also you engine. It's an alcohol based fuel. Just look at top fuel dragsters who use methnol, another alcohol same family at ethonol. They use it to get good power but also replace the whole engine alot and also various componants every few drags.

I'm not sure about this part but looking for people to add: Is it not a simulated to octane mesure. As in not the same _____, just someone who grows sugar calling it the same _____.

Re: ethanol...

Organic Ethanol can be extracted from sugar cain. You can also extract organic deisel (From someother plant). Once extracted they are both refined and cleaned.

Both Octane and Ethanol have the Carbon chain.

Here is a quick basic Chem lesson for you guys:

Meth... 1 carbon atom
Eth...   2 carbon atoms
But...   3 Carbon atoms
Prop... 4 Carbon atoms
Pent... 5 carbon atoms
Hex...  6 carbon atoms
Hep...  7 carbon atoms
Oct...   8 carbon atoms
ect.

These Carbon atoms have a covalent bond between each other C-C.

Now that name on the end eg. "ol" "ane" "ene" ect. is determined by the bondage in the atoms say single or double bonds also if the molecule has a alcohol group attached to it "OH", but said "ol"

To make it a little more clear here are some pics of a Octane molecule and an Ethanol molecule:

Octane:

Ethanol:

Re: ethanol...

standard engines can take up to 23% ethanol mix without seriously messing up the engine.
there are advantages to it such as less carbon deposits everywhere (burns cleaner) but its also going to be a lot more expensive if everyone starts using it, simply cause it takes a lot of energy and raw materials to make (fractional distillation, essentially a still, the way people make rum).
brazil tried it for a while but found it wasnt economically viable cause it took up too much land to grow all the sugar cane needed to provide enough raw materials to make enough ethanol to power a nations cars.

with the Subaru's the ones which arnt ment to run on ethanol are the B4's and the 99/00 STi's as they were imported from japan.

i emailed subaru a while ago and they said something about not covering cars under warrenty if they use the ethanol as Subaru do not recomend it...

because imports are designed to run on japan fuel, which is much higher octane than here.

its 100 octane afaik. it all depends on the state of the tune... seeing the japanese fule is much higher octane and better quality i dont think it would react good with ethanol...

Now your talking Methanol.. visit rare spares and buy a small drum of C-16, for every 10L of normal fuel pour a litre of C-16, then you will see the difference, I used to run the commo like that on weekends heheh, C-16 is 116 ron. MASSIVE difference,

Re: ethanol...

There is sooooo much dicussion about this.

I used the 100 octane shell extreme when it had 10% ethanol, and now it has been changed to V Power racing and 5%. I used the Vpower racing on the cruise night and it did not Ping once....... and i have an over boosting issue.

I have used like 8 or 9 tank fulls of the stuff and have only found that my car absolutly LOVES it.

Goes harder and behaves much nicer!!! So until i have an issue then i will stop using it..... or until it goes back up to the $1.50 or $1.60 that it was 3 months ago. But at $1.20 i'll have it!!!

SPOT ON MATE! NICE POST.

Well if we really want to test this we can measure it. For the next few weeks I'll fill 2 tanks of each fuel. I will measure out how many kms I get per L of fuel. It is best if I do at lease 2 tanks of each in a row so the second would rinse out any previous brand.

Hypothesis: That a higher octane % provides a more effective and complete combustion.

These are the brands I will be testing:

BP Ultimate (98% octane, 3x less sulphur)
BP Unleaded 95 (95% octane)
BP Regular Unleaded (91% octane)
The Sugar Cain one from United.

Keep in mind it takes me roughly 1 week sometimes more to go throw a tank. I will be going throw 2 tanks of each.

It will be very helpfull if others try this with say Shell fuels, Safeway, Caltex ect. and the United Ethanol version so we also find out what brand has the best Quailty fuel and what car handdels what kind best. I will also qote on what I thought ran the best in term of performance.

RESULTS:

Since I have allready been mesuring my fuel consumtion I have my last 2 weeks.

BP Ultimate (98% octane, 3x less sulphur):
492.2km/ 45.43L   = 10.83km/L
517.25km/ 44.99L = 11.50km/L

BP Unleaded 95 (95% octane)

BP Regular Unleaded (91% octane)

United Boost 98

United Plus ULP

*WHATS HAPPENING NOW: At the moment I have half a tank of BP Ultimate, Next I will refill with "BP Unleaded 95" and post up this tanks results.

Seems like a good test but you'll never know the long run cost of what is happening to your car. Will it be worthwhile if your engine loses 20,000ks on the end of it's usual lifespan?

there are 2 diff ethanol fuels at united.

95 octane which is cheaper than normal unleaded which has 10% eth
98 octane "boost 98" which is cheaper than normal 98 and has 10% eth
