ej20tt blown head gasket

  Top of Page

Hi guys. Found this site a few weeks ago, and just been reading since. I've got a 1994 liberty with an ej20tt. Had a compression test done and was told it has a blown head gasket. It drives fine for about 20 min then starts playing up and just gets me home. Does'nt always play up though. Got a quote of around $3500 to fix head gasket, but am considering an engine swap for a low km import motor as I'm not that confident on the condition of the rest of the motor, turbos etc. It also seems to be a bit cheaper (approx $2500). Does anyone have any ideas of the best path 2 take? Also considered a swap 2 a single turbo wrx import motor. Would this involve a lot more work/money and possible power loss?

hey mate,

About 6 months ago I blew a head gasket on my ej20T and proceeded to pull the engine out, have the head machined new gaskets etc etc and it ended up costing me just under 1k.  For about 1k you can have a ej20t delivered to you from Ichiban with a turbo.

If this happened again I would definately go this way, you can then also sell the parts you don't need (spare turbo, manifold, etc)

I'm not sure on prices for an ej20tt, although maybe time to consider a single conversion?

Last I looked, TT motors from Ichiban were about $100 cheaper than single turbo motors!

Easy option, and like scrim said, you can flog off all of the unnecessary parts...

also, most people seem to notice an improvement in power with the single turbo (td05) wrx engine swap.  I'm sure there are details on what changes must be done to the wiring on here or RSLC somewhere.

Yeah think i'll try the single turbo conversion first. Never really a fan of the twin turbo set up. Just need the car 2 get me 2 work right now, but the single turbo seams a lot easier to mod later on. Why would u get power increase with the single turbo even though it produces less kw?
