For a .au your mate needs a registered Australian business ( an ABN or ACN will do ), unless he is after a .id.au

The best place I know of is Jumba - www.jumba.com.au

They're based in Melbourne, have support during business hours via phone/fax/email/live chat as well as a forum which staff and customers use 24/7.

I have 2 packages registered with them ( just a .com and .net ), which if I can remember correctly, I paid for each $AU60ish/year all up including domain rego, 800mb storage, 8gb bandwidth/month, cPanel/fantastico ( every script you want/need, automatically installed ), etc etc.

Your mate wants it for email yeah? In cPanel, you just add "username" and "password" to the forms, click a button, and it imports a registry file for your email program, which will instantly use/have set up the new email addy.

In the two years of using them, I've suffered maybe 1 or 2 hours of downtime. They're fantastic. My .com was accessible within 2 hours of registration.

Westnet.com.au (not .net.au <-- different company) HAS used MelbourneIT as a registra, however westnet is (and has been for a while now) a registra for domains. We most defiantly have all our own servers for hosting... My position is like a NOC, I have to watch over them all. Well, I certainly hope the servers are still sitting at the data center otherwise im going to be fired for missing them all being stolen!!

MelboureIT simply register the domain name. They have nothing to do with the hosting of the DNS or any other services related to your domain. You pay westnet, not MelbourneIT. If you payed MelbourneIT, call domains and get that checked out!

Is it westnet.COM.au or .NET.au, because .NET.au is a completely different company and they may operate differently.

Personally I use Aust Domains for as my registrar, and host my sites myself. Complete control over your hosting server is always nice, and no stupid storage restrictions, or restrictions on how many email accounts you're allowed to have...
