DIY: Reprogram new remote for central locking

  Top of Page

hi all,

just thought i'd post this up as i found out how to do it after a bit of searching on google. If you need to program a new remote for the central locking here's the process.

- Take off the plastic door sill protector that runs along the bottom of the door
- Behind the plastic protector is 2 hidden plastic plugs that are unplugged
- Plug the 2 wires together
- I did this with the doors shut, and ignition off. With the 2 wires plugged together, press the LOCK button on the original remote, immediately press the LOCK button on the new remote.
- Then press the OPEN button on the original remote then immediately press the OPEN button on the new remote.
- The indicators flashed a couple of times and the doors unlocked and locked and then it was done! Simple.
- Unplug the 2 wires and reassemble the door trim.
- JUST REMEMBER!!! DON'T FORGET TO UNPLUG THE 2 WIRES!!!!

Hope this helps someone smile

Cheers, Nic

Is this a Gen specific fix?

umm sorry I forgot to put that, I'm not sure but I have a GEN3 Outback so Libertys/Outbacks and foresters etc around this year model (ie. late 98 - 03)
The site I actually found the info on was for a forester but I just tried it and it worked, I wasn't going to pay Subaru dealership to do something that took me 5 mins!

What remote did you use with this?

I asked subaru for a replacement key with the built in remote, and they wanted almost $400 for it!

The bottom of which door? Are you talking about the door skin or the door sill plate?

He is talking about the right hand kick panel trim (next to the go pedal). The plugs are white. This will work on Forester SF series,Impreza MY98-MY02,Lib/Out Gen2 -Gen3.From MY03 FOZ,IMP,LIB,OUT is a slightly different procedure. But remember this is only for keyless entry not immobilizer.

Wish you can program the central locking so with one press it only unlocks the drivers side door and with two it opens all 4.

Typical, and to think a '97 VS Calais had this option 5 years earlier.

Question. Can a new key be programmed if you dont have an original key? As I have the remote control unit from the halfcut but not a key

If your transmitter is seperate from your key and it is from around the same year it should work,as long as you are talking about the remote entry.

sorry I meant that I have the control unit not the transmiter. My car doesnt have factory keyless but when I switched looms for my conversion the new loom had the remote unit. So what i was meaning is if I was to get a new transmiter or find a 2nd hand one can it be programmed in a similar way to work with this control unit?

can i get a definite answer. Would my RX come with central locking?? cause if so i dont have the transmitter. So is it possible if i get one of the transmitters if i do this will it work?? As by the explanation from the OP it seems as though you need an original transmitter.

I can only think of checking if you have the keyless module? I think its behind the glove box attached to a bracket along with the cruise control module.

Hey cm27456,If you have a RX it will have central lock as standard. You can verify this by moving your inner door lock and see if the others work.If it works you will need to get a factory FOB and code it as per the instructions. They are not cheap though.PM your vin and i will see what i can do.

Re: DIY: Reprogram new remote for central locking

I have a few questions. I have a 2001 liberty RX.
I have an original key with unlock / lock buttons. Unfortunately it has taken a spin in the washing machine and now the central locking does not work.
Can I get a old key of someone and reprogram it?
What controls the immobilizer? Is it the little ferrite covered object in the case corner?
I don't feel like paying $380 from Subaru if possible. What a rip-off!!
Is there anything I should look out for?

Re: DIY: Reprogram new remote for central locking

hey guys. just got a gen3, 99 RX and wen locking and unlocking the blinkers dont flash (i am assuming this is the way its meant to be. correct?).
But its really annoying, means i cant be far away from the car and press lock and know it DID lock cos u need to hear the sound..

so what i want to know, is if the blinkers can be made/programmed to flash??

thanks anyone. in particular, eddie. u seem to know your stuff aye smile
