DIY: Rear Bushing Change

  Top of Page

Tools Used:
1 x ½” dr socket set
1 x 600mm breaker bar (they’re cheap so go get a Jimy one for $30 and save a lot of heartache)
1 x ½” dr 70mm extenesion
1 x ½” dr 20mm extenesion
1 x 17mm spanner
Pentrene/INOX (or your other favourite debinder, WD40 doesn’t cut it, sorry folks)
Paring knife
File set (full round and half round)
Vice
Oxykit

Time Needed:
3 hours

Parts:
Replacement rear bush kit (preferably get the split tupe that you can push in from either side)

Theory:
Bushes wear out over time and cause driveline slop.  Eventually you need to get them replaced, this is how to do it yourself.

Method
1.    Chock the front wheels
2.    Crack the nuts on the rear wheels
3.    Jack the rear of the car up ~300mm high
4.    Lay cardboard crawls boards down
5.    Undo the control arms that contain the bushings
6.    You might have to move this big brace out of the way first to get the RH camber bolt out:
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l236/DjbLibHeritage/My%20Liberty/Mods/Rear%20Bushing%20Upgrade/Image030.jpg

7.    Clamp one of the removed control arms in your vice and proceed to heat up the centre (called a crush tube) so that the surrounding rubber melts and you can push the OEM crush tube out.

Note: The OEM crush tubes are longer by 4mm than the factory ones and you’ll need to pack them out with the washers in the kit (or go to the hardware store and get some)
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l236/DjbLibHeritage/My%20Liberty/Mods/Rear%20Bushing%20Upgrade/Image001.jpg

8.    Repeat for all crush tubes in the arms
9.    Once the crush tubes are out, get to work on the remaining rubber with the paring knife and round files so that you remove as much as possible of the OEM rubber.
10.    Put a film of dish washing liquid on the replacement bush and push into the OEM outer shell.
11.    Push the replacement bush into the bush
12.    Repeat for all arms

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l236/DjbLibHeritage/My%20Liberty/Mods/Rear%20Bushing%20Upgrade/Image019.jpg

13.    Repeat steps 6, 8, 9 and 10 for the OEM bush that resides in the rear hub (it’s a little awkward but you’ll get there).

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l236/DjbLibHeritage/My%20Liberty/Mods/Rear%20Bushing%20Upgrade/Image024.jpg

14.    Re-install control arms with washers to pack out (refer 6).

My Notes
This was a relatively straightforward process once I got the correct bush kit.  Apparently for my car (Gen3 RevB Wagon) the bushes and bolts are different sizes to all kits that are available on the market.

The kit comes sized for the following:
4 x M14x1.25 bolts
2 x M12x1.25 bolts
2 x M16x1.25 bolts (for camber)
8 x 34mmID outer shells

My car came with the following:
2 x M12x1.25x80mm bolts (to go through hub bush)
4 x M12x1.25 x70mm bolts
2 x M16x1.25 x80mm bolts (for camber)
6 x 34mmID outer shells
2 x 30mmID outer shells (in the hub)

Hence I had to obtain the following:
2 x 30mm OD bush (2)
2 x Crush tube suitable for 34mm OD bush and M12 bolt (1)
2 x Crush tube suitable for 30mm OD bush and M12 bolt (3)

I turned up (1) on a lathe (took 15mins)
I sourced (2) and (3) from a Nissan Silvia front upper control arm bushing kit (much help To Car Toque Products Adelaide for their Help).

Cheers
Darryl

Nice write up, but I have a little off topic question for you. What are those swaybar endlinks you have?

Re: DIY: Rear Bushing Change

The swaybar endlinks are aftermarket OEM style replacements.  They are double rose joints units with a 10mm shaft connecting the 2 ends.  Each joing is pre-greased and sealed.  They are threaded and you cut to the desired length and then tighten down a locknut so as to stop one end rotating.

After my conversion I only had 2 functioning rose-joint style endlinks that then broke due to the swaybar being wrong for the car (I had to have a custom one made).  I used short plastic Ibeam type connectors that were under too much twisting load, before installing a complete set of what you see.

They are available in 8mm shaft (what' recommended for Impreza/liberty) and also 10mm (for 4WD and heavy cars).  They were ~$30ea for 8mm and ~$35ea for 10mm or so from CarTorque Products.

They are much better and easier to use than the whiteline units (not sealed or pre-greased) and also much cheaper (~$100ea for the whiteline unit from memory).

Cheers
Darryl

Hey djb,

This just doesnt match up with your ones??? Their also a roadsafe brand? is that what you got???

Sorry bout all the questions but i need these links and dont want to fit the dodgy whiteline rear units??? as mine already squeel??!!

Re: DIY: Rear Bushing Change

Had a talk to the nice people at Cartorque (S.A) and they supplied me with this info,

The links i think were looking for are a ROADSAFE ball link (universal fitment),
they come in a few sizes, the two were after are;

STB4208 - 8mm rod,200mm long,10mm ball stud - $32 (small cars)
STB4209 - 10mm rod,320mm long,10mm ball stud - $34 (medsize cars)
STB4210 - 10mm rod,320mm long,12mm ball stud -?price? (4WD applications)

CHEAP AS....compared to the whiteline ones smile

The 12mm ball stud is IMO too big,but the 8 or 10mm rod with the 10mm ball stud seem alrite, are the ones djb has fitted the 8mm shaft??
They only have the 12mm in stock, but can get the others on request.

Im in NSW and am keen as to get these,i might search around and see if theres a local distributor, hopefully there is? or ill see if they can post them..

haha i wonder if they go cheaper in bulk (even though it is pretty cheap!),group buy?:Derisive:

Who's starting the G.B then?
No doubt you'll get ALOT of interest, specially from the people who have the Whiteline Spherical Bearing (me...) kits.

Go the 10mm too I think, better in the long run.

Re: DIY: Rear Bushing Change

Hi All,
sorry for the delay in replying but I've been at a confence and then moving house for the last fortnight.

The ones I used were the last ones that you listed, for 4WD from.  They were ~same price as the 10mm joint ones, so I went large for longer wearing and ability to take more punishment.

I can ring up and ask the staff there as I have an account with them (I've put about 4K through them over the past 2 years).

If you're interested I can look into getting group pricing on the 4WD set.

It took me ~20 mins to install them as you see.
1 - undo bolts of OEM unit (or cutoff with angle grinder if they're too rusted (what I did).  You'll need an 6mm (I tihni) allan key for this and maybe a 14mm spanner (can't remember exactly).

2 - Take OEM unit and replacement unit to shed.

3 - Cut replacement units to length, screw in and tighten lock nut.

4 - Refit to car.

Cheers
Darryl

Cool thanks for the info djb...
I fitted a set of the 10mm shaft/10mm ball studs yesterday, they were considerably larger than the original....and were fitted with ease!!

If i have an issue with them i may go up to the 12mm size....but side by side the new ones are huge!!

see below.  I meant they were an M10 thread with the 4WD ends.

Ridiculously cheap when compared to the Whiteline stuf, aslo a much better delivery time, as whiteline are being dificult ATM.

There's a reason they only have the 12mm joint instock.  They cost the same as the 10mm joint but are bigger and stronger.  Why bother with the smaller weaker joint?  This was my logic as well.

Hope you spoke to Jenny there.  She know's her stuff and used to race a Bugeye on the track and know's her stuff.  Others there are helpful but not as knowledgeable.  Dave is easy to deal with and went to school with Billsy.  Adelaide hey, 2 degrees of separation betweeen anyone.

just found this thread, lucky i haven't bought those whiteline links yet

so, i am guessing from what i can see that because these links are universal, they will work for both standard swaybars and whiteline/other aftermarket bars?

would they also work with front swaybars?

sorry ofr the noobishness, just wanna make sure
