DIY Gen3 TT: Install Of My Tmic From Hyperflow.

  Top of Page

Well it's been long over due, but finally a chance to get this up so you all can see how simple the Hyperflow TMIC with MUCH larger core (385mm x 155mm x 115mm core size) that replaces the OEM B4 TMIC.

A big shout out to PHAT GT who took up the challenge and allowed my to take pictures of him in action.....

Well the install is very much straight forward and if you don't rush you will not have too much trouble.

Removal of the OEM TMIC and the connecting hoses which has only 2 bolts holding this down, when removing the hosesbe carefull not to break the little nipples as they can be brittle and snap off. My hoses were marked already 1,2,3, 22 etc these are the ones that need to be removed.

You also need to take off the BOV & connecting hose as this need to go onto the new TMIC. Once off the engine, remove the pipes and hoses, replaces these with the silicon ones or use the same add the BOV to the new TMIC and prepare to re-intall in reverse order.

Looks sweet, have you taken the thing for a drive, any difference?

When will we be seeing you out at WSID next! It'll be interesting to see how your times compare with all the modifications done (and in cooler weather).

I'm tossing up between a tmic or fmic for my next car, process west have a very nice example of both. The top mount handles around 220kw atw, but i want the flutter!

They both look great!

I've already Dyno'd the car, but it was running a little phat!!

I am not finished so these numbers are not yet going to be released. The improvements have been awesome, but it wasn't until the xorst went on that I noticed a major increase!!

Cmon XXB4XX lets line em up now byatch! :yes2:

The core does get a lot hotter, so I guess it's working, but I need to trim the bonnet scoop as it's covering half the TMIC now.

looks good. the B4 bolt in unit? Theyre a fair bit smaller than the hyperflow wrx cores. But what counts is that these aftermarket cores are a lot more efficent than the factory ones. they cool down very fast after siting at the light etc, still no complaint with mine - except because its bigger is a bastard to take in and out haha. good to see more people doing the good mods,

i dont know if this is a stupid question or not, but why does the factory paint the intercooler black? dosent that make it hotter?

painting black will make it both radiate and absorb heat better.

wich i think would make it work better whilst driving ..but it might make it heatsoak quicker whilst still.

Looking good kosti. i see an update of the dyno charts coming soon.

is it more top end youve gained or just generally better everywhere.

how much gain was from the cooler, how much from the exhaust?

I'm pretty sure paint will make it worse in all conditions. You 'might' have a greater surface area with the paint, but the material of the intercooler core should have better heat transfer properties than paint.

Re: DIY Gen3 TT: Install Of My Tmic From Hyperflow.

the idea of it being black comes from the electronic days of power amp heatsinks and as mentioned absorbs heat much better than any other colour.

This is true with clothing as well wear black in summer and your sure to melt, wear somthing white and it's going to be a lot cooler between your legz!

The TMIC is not noticable until your speedo starts to break trhe law, this is mainly for high top end driving.

The thing gets extremely hot during heatsaoking, but once on the move it cools down a lot quicker than the standard OEM TMIC.

I gain was minimal with only 2-5Kw max

Hello quick question
Does the TT TMIC have 2 separate chambers or does the imput "mix"  in the bottom chamber and pass through?

Hi mate,

First off welcome to the forums!!

These have two serperate chambers as shown in the pictures but it is not the same as a STi or WRX where it uses a Y shape hose :victory:

Yea I understand that, but isn't the whole point to reject as much heat as possible?

edit: nevermind me, didn't read the original post asking why subaru paint em black.

Re: DIY Gen3 TT: Install Of My Tmic From Hyperflow.

the increased surface area by painting would be completely negligble, and yes there is some insulation effect of adding paint, but a thin layer of black paint would improve heat transfer to the atmosphere as it would increase the level of radiant heat over a silver metal. I have not done this though and i really don't know how to test it properly to see if its worth it anyway.

painting intercooler is a waste of time, unless its to hide it from view.

anodising would be the way to go if you wanted that extra poofteenth out of your cooler

I good thing about this TMIC is I don't collect as much leaves as they just slide off instead of getting caught in the core..:victory:

I would have thought that the INTERNAL surfaces of the IC should be black to absorb the heat better from the air passing thru the IC whilst the outer should silver to reflect the heat from outside the IC.
As the black absorbs the temp the IC's body heat would go up and be given off to the external air passing thru the IC fins. With the external being silver little ambient heat would be absorbed into the IC body.
