I put some LED's in the grills next to the fog lights on my Gen III.

I have only done one side, so they haven't been wired up yet. The LED's are the bright white ones, 5mm from ebay. All that is required is to drill out the grill a little so the LED will fit, and put a resistor on each LED. It should be a fairly easy DIY, just need some soldering skills.

I plan to make a grill for the front of my RX and put some 10mm LED's in it. When I get them installed I'll upload some photos.

keep documenting the build mate, we will throw it in the tech section once your experiment is completed!

No worries,
Sorry for the bad quality photos too.

I'll write up a more comprehensive DIY (step by step) when I have completed them.

Looks like they're in series?
Nice idea, you should make up a custom grill and mount them up properly, would look great.

No they are in parallel, so all have individual resistors. You could put them all in series and run to a 5W wirewound resistor to dissipate the heat.

The grill's I have are where the hooks are for what I presume a nudge bar on the front next to the fog lights. I'm going to get some mesh and bend it to shape, put in behind where the subaru logo is on the bonnet. Stops the bugs getting in and if I get 10mm mesh I can fit some 10mm white LED's in too. I'll keep you updated.

Actually if you put 3 in series, your resistor can be smaller because its still limiting the same 20mA of current, but has to drop less voltage.

Also i recommend you chose your resistor values based on 14 volts if you want them to last.

So 12v with 3 resistors in series = 120 ohm resistor
12v with individual resistors = 470 ohm
14v with 3 resistors in series = 220 ohm
14v with individual resistors = 560 ohm

Tools Required:
Soldering Iron, 5mm drill bit

Parts:
5mm Ultra Bright White LED's (find them somewhere on ebay)
Cigarette Lighter plug
Glue
Wire

Before you start, check where on your car would be most suitable to install the LED's. Personally I didn't want to drill into anything substantial that couldn't be fixed later in the car. I chose the grills that came stock next to the fog lights as the gaps in the grill were close enough to 5mm and only required a little drilling out.

The other possible locations could be just in front of the radiator, around where the car logo is, however you will need to find out how to mount them.

I got my LED's and a 5mm drill bit. I didn't even need a drill, I just turned the drill bit a few times and this was enough to be a tight fit for the LED. I placed them so as all the negative sides of the LED's could be connected together easily. Once pushed through to the correct depth, I aligned them all up roughly.

Then some glue, preferably hot glue is used to secure them in place. This can be easily removed later if you sell the car, or want to remove them.

Next is the choice of resistor for them. You can either wire them in them in series or parallel. I chose parallel, as you only need a few small resistors, and you can accurately control the brightness/current of each LED.

There are different types of LED's, so you will have to calculate the resistor value for the amount of current to flow. I chose 20mA. Normally the Operational Voltage is around 3.2V - 3.6V and max current is around 30mA. So you do,

14.4V (highest voltage when your alternator is charging)
    - 3.6V (Op Voltage max)
=  10.8V

Then divide 10.8V by 20mA (or the current you want to flow). Remember to convert mA to amps.

     10.8/0.020A
= 540.

This is our resistor value 540 ohms. You can use 1/4W resistors, however they do get warm, so if your resistor is located somewhere where there is not much airflow to cool it down, I would put in a slightly bigger 1/2W resistor.

Wire these up to the positive lead of the LED (called the Anode, and is the longest leg on the LED).

Then connect the other ends of all the resistors together, with a bit of short wire or similar. Now connect both your grills that have been made up together, positive to positive and negative to negative.

Install back in the car and wire to a suitable plug or relay/switch. I connected the negative of mine to the car chassis near the headlight and the positive wire back to a cigarette lighter plug in the car. Easy switching!!

Let me know how you go.

I wonder how effective these would be in fog?

Probably inversely proportional to the effectiveness this would be in attracting the boys in blue?

You know fitting these LED's and using them on a public road is an offence?

219. Lights not to be used to dazzle other road users

A driver must not use, or allow to be used, any light fitted to or in the driver’s vehicle to dazzle, or in a way that is likely to dazzle, another road user.

This is the closest in the legislation that I can find. Oh, and only use fog lights in reduced visibility.

First of all these HID lights are illegal as they dazzle me when I drive at night. Second my LED's can't dazzle, they aren't bright enough. They aren't fog lights either, they are "driving lights".

It'll be interesting if I do get pulled up smile.

What document are you quoting this form? What state? Where abouts?

We're not talking about standard positioned lights that have been installed by a manufacturer. I'm referring to your multiple aftermarket fitment of lights. Regardless of the brightness, You're only allowed a pair of lights as parking lights, a pair of lights as headlights, and if the conditions allow for it, a pair of lights as foglights. You can't have multiple lights like that unless it has been ADR approved (ala Audi, Holden, etc etc).

And I'm still awaiting your comment on the fitment of multiple LED's emitting low powered blue light and its effectiveness in foggy conditions.

No worries,
Sorry yes, I'll see how effective they are in the fog. It will interesting to see the differences between my standard fog lights and these.

Here is the direct link, hopefully it works.

From what I can tell, there is no road rule that says you can't here in Tasmania, I'm not familiar with other states. If I get pulled up, I'll tell you the outcome smile.

I have seen other vehicles and I know of other road users who have installed these and they have had no problems at all.

I'd be very surprised if any of their light even makes it to the road 2cm in front of the car. They aren't going to do anything at all in the fog...
