Digi cam suggestions

  Top of Page

Hey folks I'm looking at picking up a digital camera and figured I might as well get some advise from some of the many camera savvy folks around here!
Basically my price range is around $500. Could stretch to about $550. Looking for something with a decent zoom (10x or greater) and am really not a fan of these tiny little stereotypical cheap digital cameras.
I'm looking to do some car photography but also some scenery type stuff, and some sports shots as well, so lots of shutter speeds to choose from would be great! (Also the sports shots would probably be in doors under fluro lights so a camera smart enough to deal with that would be really nice)
I'm well aware my budget won't stretch for a digi SLR (sadly) so I'm hoping some of you more experienced guys will have had a play with some of the cheaper cameras as well!

At the moment I'm thinking the Fujifilm S5700 but if someone can sway my decision to something else of decent quality please do!

Thanks for anyone with some advice big_smile

From experience I'd try to find a camera with a PC dock.
The dock is always connected to the PC and power. To charge the batteries or download pics you simply sit the camera in it's dock and hit a button. Couldn't be easier.
The upside for me was the camera were never flat.
After using one with my still camera I was more than happy when the video camera I purchased had a dock too.

Don't rule out Kodak. I was very wary about buying one but have had several good years out of it. Fantastic colour reproduction.

ive had the fuji s5500 for a couple of years, precursor to the s5700 by a couple of models, been happy with it. mostly done landscape type shots with it but good results indoor under incandescent for partys/christmas an so on, nothing serious. the 10x zoom is a pearler.

i have the panasonic FZ7. it's got a 10x zoom, 6mp, anti-shake, full manual operation ( as well as auto ), and the best bit - a 2 inch screen. beats the postage stamp size screen of other cameras. it's about a year old, so by now you could get the next model up - FZ8 - for around the $500 mark.

camera house is a good place to buy cameras and accessories. i found teds to be a wee bit too expensive.

another good thing about the FZ7, for me anyway, is that i have an adaptor for the lens so i can slide in cokin filters and get some half-decent shots, like this with a tobacco grad filter ::

I've had 3 Canon Digi's all around that price and they've all done me very well in the past.

Pretty much anything on this list (already sorted by price) I would recommend.

EDIT: Techbuy are not bad either, little bit expensive but good online store! Quick delivery etc...

Cheers for the replies so far guys.
I'm now tossing up between the Finepix S5700 and a Canon S5 IS... Image quality seems to be quite similar between the two, the major differences being that the Canon has a 12x zoom and 8mp, whereas the Fuji has 10x zoom and 7.2mp, however the Fuji is around $150 cheaper...

There's going to be bugger all difference in image quality between 7.2 and 8meg, i reckon you should go down to Harvey Moron and look at both of them. Push the buttons, fiddle the switches and take a couple of photo's, see what you like the feel of better.

Hi mate, i just bought myself the Canon S3-1S (6MP) and it's an awesome camera.  So i'd bet the S5-1S is even better. i compared the canon to both the equivalent Nikon and Olympus and the Canon wins hands down.  Nikon menu / button configuration is confusing for me and the Olympus had poor Manual controls compared to that of the canon.

I love my Olympus point and shoot for it's sheer simplicity and the Canon is a great entry-level camera for taking some really nice shots.

megapixel doesn't matter. at the end of the day, if your photos aren't going to be printed at more than A4 size, anything over 3 megapixel is fine.

zoom is good. if you can have a wee bit more, they have a pentax dSLR going for $699.

make sure you want a bigger camera..  i have two, a pentax with a decent zoom..  but to be honest it's the little tiny wee one is usually the one I take with me, just cos it fits in my pocket...

That one's a Canon IXUS and the pics are just fine...  just a thought..

Here's a compact that has 6x zoom (you can probably adapt 2x or 4x too) good trade off between slim and large bodies and bet ya the pics are nice too..  It has Image Stabilizer too..

Cheers for the suggestion but yes, I'm pretty sure I want the larger style, for both comfort and the larger zoom.
I quite like photography, and this camera will sort of be a trial to see if I'm actually any good at it. If I am, I might look at a dSLR in the future. If not, no biggy, I've at least got a decent camera to play with... But this being the case, the camera has to have a fully manual mode so I can fiddle with the settings to my hearts content.
That's pretty much why I'm still looking strongly at the Fuji... As well as the decent image quality at highish ISO settings.

I own a canon S2IS.  It's an awesome camera, does all I want and could ever want (as I don't want a DLSR).  I do find it a little bulky though.

I am therefore thinking of getting a Panasonic DMC-TZ3-K:
http://www.techbuy.com.au/p/72558/DCAME … -TZ3-K.asp

It's a little out of your price range, but has same features as the canon, but is about 1/2 the size, so you can put it in your coat breast pocket and it'll fit, unlilke the canon.

Just my 2c worth.

Cheers
Darryl

Re: Digi cam suggestions

I've been following this thread for a little while, so I thought I'd throw in some general comments and suggestions.. not sure if any of it will help, but here goes..

Firstly, a very, very worthwhile investment with any camera you get, is a decent tripod. Something in the $80 - $150 bracket will help you out a lot.

If you're looking at getting a bit into photography and taking some nice shots, especially of still objects (scenery, cars, landscapes etc.) ..and if you're going to buy a camera with manual settings.. to get the most out of it, then I'd deffinately consider getting a tripod as some stage in the near future.

If you cant afford a tripod.. find something to lean on, or place your camera on a timer and sit it on a wall/ log/ something still.. Improvise! wink

My new toy is a Nikon D80, but I've also currently got a Sony DSC-H5 which is;

http://www.abcelectronique.com/comparateur/image_son/photo/appareil_photo_numerique_bridge/photos/cybershot_dsc_h5_sony.jpg

It's 7.2 mp, 12 x Optical Zoom, 3 inch screen, tons of settings, full manual modes (Aperture, Shutter speed, Manual etc.).. So all the bells and whistles, and yes, it's bulky.. about the size of a small DSLR (like a Nikon D40X)
Does the fact that it's bulky bother me?.. Nope.

It really is a great camera and comes to life when you strap it to a tripod and put it in manual mode and shoot away.

These are some shots I took on 07/07/2007 - City as the sun was rising..

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t25/legacy007/07072007HarbourBridge.jpg

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t25/legacy007/07072007OperaHouse1.jpg

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t25/legacy007/07072007OperaHouse.jpg

The only altering on these photo's was the adding of the black border... other than that, this is the quality of the shots that you can take with a decent Sony camera on the right settings (I'm sure you could do better - I'm certainly no pro)

Re: Digi cam suggestions

One thing I would probably point out though, is that I probably wouldnt place a big portion of my decision making on a camera's zoom range.

I initially did this with my Sony, thinking 'this is awesome, 12x zoom, all the others are 3x etc' .. and to be honest with you.. Even with all the anti-shake, inage stabilising and all the rest.. If you are holding the camera in your hands, and trying to take a shot with anything past say 3 - 5x zoom, it's going to be increadibly hard to get a crisp shot.

With the Sony, I very, very rarely zoom in past 4x and even then, it's normally on a tripod. So I guess that's something to think about.

My brother also recently bought a Nikon S500;

http://www.pma-show.com/news_images/0000009_nikon_coolpix_s500_zoom1.jpg

Now this thing is cool!!.. He picked it up from Digital City, with an extra battery and 2, 2 GB SD cards for a total of $520.

Now I know you're not after a 'pocket' point and shoot camera, but this thing is pretty damn cool and has features that compare very well to my Sony.

With point and shoot and DSLR camera's, I personally think that Nikon and Canon have the best image processors in their cameras. The sony is great, but to be honest, I find that it doesnt pick up the 'true' colours of the things I shoot and sometimes the photo's look a little lifeless..

I've never used a Pentax, Fujji or any of the others, so I cant really comment on those that much.

Seeing as though you want to take some nice shots though, I would deffinately look for a camera with the following;
Adjustable ISO and White Balance as a minimum. Then, where you can, I would try and get a camera with adjustable aperture, shutter speed, or a manual mode which lets you play with all of the above and totally customise your shots.

Check out:

For some pretty decent reviews if you're interested!

Hope it helps a bit smile

Finally! Been waiting for you to comment J big_smile

Thanks for the comments mate. I'll definitely have to have a look at that Sony of yours but unfortunately it looks like it might be just a tad out of my price range. I could probably stretch for it, but then I couldn't afford anything else like memory cards, tripod, case etc.
As for the Nikon, it does look like a fairly good camera, but I'm not too keen on the tiny size as you're already aware.
I'm actually looking at a Fuji S6500fd at the moment (I know I seem to be stuck in Fuji mode big_smile) as it has a nice high ISO, and is supposed to take much better quality images at higher ISO settings than cameras in a similar price range. It also seems to have much better colour reproduction than similar cameras. If you've got any comments on this thing or any of its features I'd love to hear them!

I'll be heading down to pick up a camera on the weekend hopefully, so I guess it'll probably all come down to what feels right when I get down there big_smile

Mate, that's an awesome camera.. it's big though...  but we discussed that...  the only real let-down looks like no external flash.. and the more expensive XD cards...

Betcha it takes good pics with those specs, shame it's not an 8 + MP though...  totally agree with J.. if you are going large format, get a tripod, mono-pod or a bean bag..  especially with that 10x zoom..  ISO is great to a point but it's better to turn ISO down as much as you can for clarity/sharpness...  that's when a tripod comes into play..

Re: Digi cam suggestions

Hahaha Xon, glad I could help! smile

Firstly, even if youy could stretch your budget to get the Sony, I probably wouldnt get it.. I was able to get it for a good price (family work @ Sony) but for normal retail, to be honest, I dont think it's really worth the RRP.

Dont get me wrong, it's an absolutely awesome camera, but I do honestly think Sony is lacking behind a little with their processors, so there are a lot of other cameras out there that will produce sharper photo's for the same money or less! smile

I just checked out the S6500fd, and read the DPReview on it and it looks like a pretty good camera! smile

Nice ISO range.. Like every camera though.. the more you bump up the ISO, the more grainy the photo will look (noise)

Good adjustment with White balance, and its got a 'custom' white balance setting which is good.. 10 x optical zoom - More than enough.. Manual Shutter, Aperture and Priority modes = Fantastic oportunities to play around!! :victory:

Another thing I like (which is the same with my Sony) is that it takes AA batteries, which means if your rechargable goes flat whilst your out and about, it's easy enough to go grab some more and keep shooting!

Overall, function wise it looks very similar to the Sony I've got and like I said.. Im no expert.. but with all those features, It gives you room to customise your shots, test out all the manual functions and really get into photo taking!

Let us know how you go with it all!! smile

Thanks for both your comments guys. I'm fairly confident that the 6500fd is what I want, so I'll get on down to the shop and demand a good price big_smile
I'll be sure to pick up a tripod while I'm at it too, as my hands are about as steady as a pile of warm dog excrement :victory:

Thanks again for all your advice, much appreciated!

Got the 6500fd. Great little camera, definitely recommend to anyone looking to get in to photography.
Only problem is I've been pretty busy and haven't had a chance to clean the car, so no photos yet
