Cornering not up to scratch?

  Top of Page

Hey guys ive had to drive my Fiance's 1996 Hyundai Lantra (auto, around 1100kg, newish el cheapo tyres) around and it actually seems to take corners better than my 1998 Bilstein Edition Liberty (auto, new tyres, all parts in good condition, 1300kgish)

I haven't actually pushed it to the limit but the Lantra feels way more composed. Whereas when pushed my Lib tends to understeer something chronic. Could it just be that the lantra FEELS better to corner then the Lib, or maybe the Lib has a further grip limit but starts to get out of shape a little earlier?

I would like to get some stats on the grip (track times, cornering g forces, driver feedback) of the Liberties compared to other common cars any ideas?

Thanks alot guys.

I know exactly what you're talking about. Push a little hard and you get chronic understeer. Push harder and it'll keep gripping wink Obviously don't do it on a blind corner with a sheer drop off...
What suspension mods have you got? If you don't have a nice thick rear swaybar, upgrading that will make a huge difference to understeer.

How much will installing a rear sway bar set me back? Ive got a front strut brace installed that my Brother gave me. Anything else I can do to eliminate that understeer?

Umm you could always do a 4 wheels drift through corners, rally drivers don't seem to get much understeer.yikes

The front strut brace is causing a lot of the understeer problems imo... Subaru's are baaaaaaasicly front wheel drive (in how they handle) so you need to stiffen up the rear end to stop understeer. If you stiffen up the front, it will only understeer more.
Get a thicker (20 or even better a 22mm) rear sway/stabiliser bar and you will notice the huge improvement.

Yeah dude Subaru make them understeer a bit coz it's easier for duds to control than hecktic drifts.
If u have done the front and not the back u will have only increased the problem.. Change the back and see how you go..

Rex ones don't work because it hits the spare tyre well.

Just to clarify what Cam said before; Outback sways are 18mm, RX sways are 16mm, 2.2L models have 14mm (IIRC).
