Clunking when turning

  Top of Page

Hi folks. Not sure if this is a drivetrain issue or a suspension issue so it may not be in the completely correct forum.

Also, CV joints have been ruled out as they were the first suspect but after a re-sleeve and clean, they're fine!

The problem seems to only arise once the car has been driven for at least half an hour (not just start and stop in traffic, but actual driving/moving). Say I've been driving around, running errands and I pull into a car park, when I turn, there's a solid clunking which can be felt through the steering and which shakes the car slightly. It speeds up and slows down with the vehicle speed so I'm guessing it's not power steering related, though I'm open to suggestions.

Any clues as to where I should be looking or what may be causing it? It hasn't gotten any worse in the 9 months or so since I first noticed it (no need to comment, I know how slack I am) but I know I should get off my arse and get it fixed.

Could be your steering rack bushes..Check them out and see how you go.
I think that whiteline have replacement units for them.

Any reason symptoms of this would only appear when it's "warmed up"?

when you did the cv joints did you put them in back the right way and tight??? pays to double check the basics before trying to figure out what it is

I had the CV joints checked at a reputable mechanic. He actually could have taken me for a ride and charged me to replace them because that's pretty much what I suggested might be required but instead he told me they were in really good condition and just needed a clean up. I'm going to run with the assumption that he put them back in the right way.

No change at all in the power steering fluid. Hasn't used a drop since I bought it (one year ago on the 23rd: great Christmas present!!) so unless there's a blockage somewhere, I think that can be ruled out too.

I really need to get in underneath and visually inspect all these things but I just haven't had time. This rain really doesn't help because I can only do it in my driveway with the garage door open and shielding me.

I've had someone else suggest that I might have incorrect P/S fluid in the system, hence why it only happens when warm. Any thoughts?

The p/s fluid's age would be more likely to cause issues. I always use auto trans fluid without any issues. Check the manual for the correct type and drain interval.

Hey Cardboared tube samurai did you end up finding out the problem with the clunking noise while turning as i have exactly the same problem on my Gen 3. Was it the power steering fluid?

I've replied to your PM Deedrah.

Long story short, no I didn't find out what it was because the problem mostly went away after I had the clutch upgraded to solid mass flywheel. I still get the occasional shuffling noise on or near full lock but it's not serious enough for me to worry about (yet!)
