Centre diff/Clutch pack problems '93 Liberty - Auto

  Top of Page

Hi guys, my '93 Liberty (auto) is behaving very badly when turning corners at low speed. The entire driveline is locking up and the only way to get out of it, is to turn the car off, where it 'releases' and sort of drops back down after being bound up. I believe it's the centre diff/centre clutch pack causing the problem, but I'm not sure how to fix it, or even trace the problem...

I had the auto rebuilt (cheaply), and I'm not too sure if it's the solenoid, or the clutch pack, of something else. I also can't find any specifics on how it is arranged or what I can do to eliminate possible causes.

I WAS hoping to pull the centre diff off the back and replace it with a new one, but it seems this is only possible on a manual version of the car as they have a viscous LSD?

I have put it in FWD (I have the GX model), but it doesn't change anything.

Anyone had this problem, or know of a technical article I could read up on?

Anyways, cheers for reading, hope someone can help.

Ok, I have done some further reading, and apologise for calling it a 'centre diff', I don't have one of those, I have a clutch pack that is controlled by a solenoid. I did swap solenoids on the car before putting the rebuilt transmission in... MAYBE I have 2 stuffed solenoids, and hence changing it didn't do anything? Can I get a multimeter on it and check?

Pretty sure the clutch pack would be ok, as it would have either been replaced, or the better of the 2 clutch packs would have been used, so at this point, I'm going to say it's my duty solenoid...

Sorry for all the questions, but this problem is quite perplexing as I just want it on the road again big_smile

And also to add, I read an earlier post of mine on this issue, and it seems I had 12 flashes of the power light for the fault code, I now have 16, but can't find any error codes to do with the auto online

Ok, I've searched heavily on this, and have diagnosed it as my duty c solenoid valve assembly. I now need to find the correct part number, I have 31942AA061 as the part number closest to what I think it is, hopefully I can access FAST and work it out

Ok, update. I bought a new duty C solenoid and swapped it over for the old one. I thought I had the problem solved, until just before...

It seems after everything's warmed up, the problem arises. What else could the problem be? I read that it could be the rear speed sensor, but I also read that if it fails, the computer uses the TPS instead...?
