Can the auto tranny handly the power??

  Top of Page

HI all,

Just a quick question.

Just wanted to know if the auto tranny from the 1995 to 1997 or even the 1998+ legacy's can handle power of about 180 to 200kw ATW??

I really want to purchase one but finding it hard to find a manual in good condition for a reasonable price, so i might have to pick up an auto for now.

Any help and information on the topic would be very much appreciated.

Cheers Sean

That is a fair point.
The car will be driven like TT car should, driven nicely as my day to day car but pushed a little on the weekends to show up silly ppl that think they have fast cars.

Hypothetically, if i was to drive my can hard all the time would the auto hold up? even with a trans cooler?
and is there a stage 2 shift kit for the legacy's?

Sorry about all the newbie questions but still learning about legacy's!

Thanks for the reply though

200kw at the wheels you say? I'd say you'd struggle to get that with an auto. Your engine would need to be making some serious power.

yeh, don't forget that the auto will cause more power loss than a manual...

while a manual might see you with 200kw atw... the auto might only see 180 or less...

also, the autos are detuned from the factory... just hold out for a manual mate... it'd be the smarter thing to do...

Thanks for the help gents.

I'm still a new to the legacy's and their power output.
I would prefer to get a manual but its hard to find one. I Found a 1998 Black Auto only done 100,000km.

But again, if i was to get up to around 180 ATW can the auto handle the power? and how much for a re build and strengthen if it craps it self? or any other auto boxes to substitute?

cheers

Yes the auto can handle the power.
Have a Fast Shift Kit installed and running 185Kw ATW

but the question you really have to ask yourself is could you actually live with yourself if you got an auto...

you lose a fair whack of control over the car (as far as acceleration/deceleration is concerned) and from what i've heard, suby autos aren't the smartest in the world...

i seriously think you should hold out for a manual...

or at least budget the $2k extra a manual conversion is likely to cost you... incase you find a really special auto...

just hold out for the manual, auto will do it, but manual will do it better. it might take you another month or two to find the right box, but your going to have it for a while, so two months is short in comparison

thanks for the help gents.

got a bit to think about....i mean i wouldn't mind getting an auto but as long as i had a shift kit to handle the power or was able to strengthen the auto in it.

but yea

auto is ONLY good in a straight line, if you want to take it to some bends, you'll hate it forever.

Better off waiting for the manual, no fun driving an auto.
