+1 for the EOS 400D.  I've heard nasty things about the twin lens kit (ie. the 70-300mm lens ain't the best quality).  I bought a 28-135mm image-stabilised ultrasonic motor lens second hand off eBay for $400 - well worth the $.  These are about $700 new, and seems to work pretty well for almost every situation I've managed to throw at it.

Unless you're really into photography, get an IXUS. They're compact and do pretty good shots for a dummy camera. Great thing is that they're small so u can just carry it in your pocket to parties n stuff like that unlike these stooges carrying huge-ass-mofo-look-at-my-canon-plebs
