Dealership or private?

Crash history is always a good one to ask. Check the books and see if it has been maintained at the same service centre for a long time. Contact the people that have worked on the car in the past about any major issues the car has had.

There's lots more, others will contribute. Try searching Google for tips to buying a car.

Nik

You will need to book it, I have only done RAC inspections, but NRMA seems to be more common over east. It is more than acceptable for you to request an NRMA or equivelant report to be conducted. If it is like the RAC, they will have different 'levels' of inspection, go for the highest.

Someone selling a car that im guessing is in the 15-20k pricerange, should be more than prepared to pay for the test.

Nik

yeah as The Protest said is good, but one thing which people often overlook is the basic things, such as the gadgetry. such as;

Power windows- check that the drivers controls work correctly and the window lock, aswell as the individual controls.

Exterior Lights- get someone to do a light check to see that everything is working and there is no shorts in the circut.

Heating and Cooling- turn the heating/cooling up full ball and see how long it take to get hot/cold

Locking- check that all locks work and if the car is equipped with central/remote locking that it works.

there is more but im sure you will know the rest.

but dont be afraid to ask the seller about the history and the books/recipts to proove it. nothing worse that a dodgy seller.

When i was buying one of my earlier cars i had been in contact with the seller and told him of my plan to have an NRMA inspection done. He told me where he worked and what hours etc, rang NRMA booked it in and payed for it. The NRMA guy went to the sellers work, did the assesment, and then faxed it to me.... seller never saw the report and it was a really comprehensive evaluation of the car from memory.... well worth getting it done IMO, and really easy to organise...

Re: Buying car tips

I used the same or similar company to check my car over when I bought it.

I had the report done in Nowra, the inspector phoned me up and gave me a run down and then uploaded the report to a website.  I knew exactly what had been done to the car and was really happy with it.  The car got a clean tick of approval and hence I bought it for a steal $14,250 with 128K on the clock.

Keep looking and take your time, I was looking for 6 months til I found my current ride, and I am so happy with it.

You may also want to look at some Gen2 single turbo conversions ala Al.  There's a few for sale advertised on here.  High on Octane's Green GX with full GTB body kit and WRX driveling for $15K, or smidge's Blue Gen2 JDM GTB for $15.5.  Both are in excellent condition and will go like the clappers.

I nearly bought Smidge's car when he beat me to it, If I weren't in love with the Gen3 shape I'd be selling my current ride and buy it now.

Cheers
Darryl

I agree, nice cars, but you'd want to check out insurance before hand. The GX would be murder on insurance.

Nope,
GX conversions are classified as GXs with modifications by most insurance companies, just ask Spinifex (Gen3 with 99WRX driveline) and some of the other guys that are driving GX (Gen2) conversions .  The insurance is only marginally higher than a stock GX, well for me anyway but I'm 27 with a clean driving record.  For imports yes, you're right, insurance may be costly.

If I were looking for a car under $15K and was looking at Liberty's, I'd go a Gen2 WRX conversion for sure, no doubt about it, cheap insureance, simple turbo system, cheap availability of spares.

That said, I'm about to convert my Gen3 Heritage to TT so why should you be listening to me.

Cheers
Darryl
