Buff marks, anyone detail cars SA?

  Top of Page

I had my car cut and polish last week, by Barossa Valet Services, it came up really nice, most of the scratches are gone and the paintwork looks nice and deep and shiny (dark metallic blue). however now seeing it under a street light, i can see buff marks all over the car!

I'm not happy about this, so I was wondering if anyone in Adelaide (or maybe north of adelaide?) is good at fixing this sort of thing?

I had the same problem after mine was machine buffed by a valet company, the buffers always leave swirl marks in the paint.
I used the Meguiars smooth surface clay kit and then a good coat of Meguiars Gold class polish.  All the swirl marks are gone and it gives the paint a really deep gloss shine.. It took a whole afternoon but it was time well spent as you can see below..

Your probably better off doing it yourself, the problem with dark metallic paint is the buff marks look more noticable and the valet company will probably just machine buff it again or tell tell you that the marks were already in the paint and their excellent polish job took so much dirt out of the paint thats why you can see them..

hmm yeah well, tomorrow im going to take the car to him and see what he says about it, if he says he wil hand polish with a good swirl removing polish or something ill have him do it, but if he reckons he will just buff it again i wont be so sure

It will save you some hours if he does.  Going over mine with the claybar made a massive difference, all the swirlmarks came out and the amount of dirt that came out of the paint turned the clay from white to brown.

any idea how i should remove the coat of wax i put over the top of his polish? he said he will have to charge me to take off the wax before he can deal with the marks underneath. is there a wax remover product or should i use a clay bar or sometihng?

I would give it a few hand wash with plenty of car shampoo and if you get a really cheap shampoo this will remove some of the wax anyway.  The claybar will remove the wax and dirt thats stuck in the paint.

ok so i finaly got some photos of my paint work (a sunny day), and if i manage to upload them correctly, you can see the result of a really crap cut and polish (not done by me of course, i would have put much more care and time into it!)

These marks are visible in most sunlight, and under streetlights or halogens. I'm not very happy about it!!

I'm taking it back to him to rectify it, and if he cant fix it i'll bring my big brother (big and strong to intimidate him haha) and demand a refund, because if he claims to have the skill and experience to deal with this sort of thing its within my rights as a consumer to demand it be done properly.

Faaaaaaark!
Im not sure if Id let this bloke near my car again if he did this. I would try for a refund and get some one who knows what theyre doing to fix it up.
It may need a light machine cut and a hand polish to remove the swirl marks. If you are going the machine cut way, there shouldnt be any need to remove the wax as the cutters will remove it.
I had a similar problem with our Mazda and managed to remove the swirls by hand polishing. I used Meguires fine cut cleaner then crystal polish and a wax, took a full day though.
Our 02RX just came back from the panel shop after a repair to the rear and they cut the whole car. Came up awsome, just needs a light polish and wax to seal it off.
Maybe a panel shop could take a look and give you some ideas?
Good luck with it!
Cheers

well i showed a guy who has done a bit of paintwork for me before, roger, he owns a body shop, and he said it looked like about an 80 dollar job this guy had done, when i paid something more like 300-400! roger said it looks like he has just gone in with a coarse cut and a coarse pad, but he should then have used a finer pad/compound, even then maybe another, finer pad and compound, and then a final hand polish.

i showed the guy, ian, that did the work (however it was overcast and very ddificult to see the marks he had made), and told him my concerns and he reluctantly said he will fix it up (actualy he said someting more like well you couldnt expect all the swirls to come out, such is the nature of this operation, but ill see what i can do - what a bull**** artist!!!), but if its not close to a showroom shine im going to demand a refund, because its a lot of money (especially for a student - i just want my car to look bloody good!!!)

im quite angry about this at the moment, i only hope that he does a better bloody job of fixing it up... if theres any areas that arent up to scratch ill find a scary lookin guy on the street to go razz him up or something haha...

Man thats shockin, what did he use? wire wool and an oily rag??.  I would have shoved his buffer somewhere buffers are not supposed to be shoved if it was my car.
I would be very wary of letting that moron near your car again.  Bring the big bro and try for the refund because he has not supplied the service he was paid for.

well the car is in the barossa and im in adelaide, so i got mum to take it back to the guy (with photos of the worst marks in sunlight - and a letter to him) and he fixed it up, but i havent seen it as yet, so i dont know how good it looks! im hoping that it looks really good, cos im not taking it back to him - he rang me up and got ****ty with me for trying to tell him how to do his job or something haha. but he is a bit of a dickhead and you cant tell these people sometimes.

ill see the car on the weekend and HOPEFULLY it will be showroom shine... well close to that anyway! ill see if i can get some photos of how it looks now when i see it

Jesus on a bike! thats horrendous.

Mate when you said swirls i thought you know the usual carwash brush swirls not  My 3yo  took the dremel to my car "swirls"

mate if thats not rectified by him i would be taking it further than just not using him again i would be into the local paper wherever you are (where is he btw NAME AND SHAME! lol) and send those photo's to them, you will be surprised how quickly pricks like that will be fixing things up.

and i cant imagine he gets alot of repeat business if thats the kind of job he does.

ok i finally got around to some pics after i took it back to him to fix it up, the car looks better, but i can still see the swirls in bright sun, and also shining a torch on the car you can clearly see all of the marks he has left in the paint.

im not going back to him, he was really rude to me on the phone and said something along the lines of "i wont be told how to do my job by someone half my age and no f-ng idea" yeah sure its tempting to take it further, but with people like that theres no point, he is dumb as **** and obviously he's the one with no idea. oh well. never again.

Re: Buff marks, anyone detail cars SA?

hey mate i was a detailer for 2 years befor i started to sell caravan spare parts...
now if i had of done that to my own car my boss would of kick my a$$ let alone a customer
who has bought there vechile to our shop and are paying for the work to be done.
(as mine were free:))

in all seriousness if this was my car i would be 100% in taking it further.
but each to there own i guess.
mate you hade to fork out the cash to by the car you wanted and obviuosly you wanted it to look good which = detailing
now when someone who is suppoused to be a professonal at what they do then the should be able to do it....

the one thing i was told by my boss and he would repeat it all the time was
"when you clean someone elses car you should treat it like its you own"

anyway just my thoughts
cheers mate

i would not only be wanting my money back i would be wanting him to pay for SOMEONE ELSE to fix it!.
