Boxer Diesel

  Top of Page

Not sure if you lads have posted this info before but here it goes anyway..

I was just snooping around the UK Subaru site and found that the Diesel has been launched there in the Outback and Legacy formats. Surely this boads well for the Australian market??

Anyway, I have some specs on the engine itself here:

5MT, AWD
Dimensions: L x W x H : 4,720 x 1,730 x 1,470 mm
Engine: Horizontally-Opposed, 4-cylinder, Turbocharged DOHC,
16-valve, diesel engine
Capacity: 1,998 cc
Max output: 110 kW (150 PS) / 3,600 rpm
Max torque: 350 Nm (35.7 kgfm) / 1,800 rpm
Combined Fuel Consumption from 48.7 mpg

48.7 MPG!!!!

To put that in Ozzy terms, that's a combined fuel consumption of aroun 5.8 L/100 klm! That should easily see you over 1000 k's per tank.

Nice bit of torque too...

Given the prices indicated in the UK, the top of the line Diesel will be selling here for about 50K.

Here's what the press are saying:

^^^^^ Ummmm Duh... WTF are you talking about scrim?

350nM of torque from 1800rpm is pretty ball tearing and would pound the p1ss out of alot of petrol powered machines.

0-100 quoted at 8.9 seconds.

Not blisteringly quick, but no slouch either. That's a few seconds quicker than the NA 2.5.

hope its very quiet and is hard to know its a diesel by the dakka dakka sound.

even late model diesels are still too noisy for my liking. I have two fiends with new diesel 4 cyl cars and they still sound like diesels.

I heard an brand new volkswagen passat wagon the other day drive past. noisiest late model diesel ive heard. like a tractor!

I had a bit of a spirited run up a mountain down around the Vic snow fields with a Golf diesel up my arse the whole time. Just because diesels don't have a huge power figure doesn't mean they can't keep up! :Pilot:

Mind you as soon as we hit a nice flat bit he was gooonnne :beach:

All the press reports listed on the first post are indicating that it's very "quiet" for a diesel.

I'm quiet looking forward to this one arriving here...

fair enough, the only experience I have with TD's is 4WDs, was a dog driving around (compared to its petrol brother) but for towing (boats in our case) it was awesome for a 4 cylinder.

I'm hoping the Diesel 6 isn't far behind.

Now that would be an engine to have!

Is there any word of a diesel auto?  Seems like nearly all diesel cars in Australia are manual.  A DSG style gearbox mated to a boxer diesel engine and not to mention AWD would be quite a phenominal car.  Hope Subaru are listening.

Re: Boxer Diesel

I've driven a golf 1.9 TD with a DSG... that was a seriously quick car, and the 2 liter VW TD is apparently faster, newer technology etc...

and the sound wasn't that loud, besides, i don't think i really hate the should of a deisel, must be the farm boy in me coming through.

wonder if there will be much boxer sound from the TD engine... I think it is going to sound unlike anything we've heard before.
