Best windscreen cleaner

  Top of Page

My windscreen is filthy on the inside. It's cloudy, has fingerprint smudges, and suction cup marks from the GPS holder.

I've used Windex, metho, vinegar, eye glasses cleaner and cloth, commercial brand automotive window cleaners/clothes and nothing works right. Smudges still appear.

Does anyone have some advice for me on what works a treat for them? Something to make the windscreen crystal clear would be fantastic.

Thanks heaps.

Use a better cloth, The microfibre polish cloths are perfect, clean the glass with some windex on paper towel then polish it good with the microfibre, even fog it up a bit with deep breaths to help see where there are prints.

works for me big_smile

Not the best solution.

Ordinary microfibre cloths leave residue, which can get awfully pesky when driving towards sunlight.

You obviously drive a lot with the windows down. Keep them up if you want cleaner glass!

There are specific microfibre cloths designed for use with glass. Use that according to instructions, some say to use with just water, but I find using it with a car specific window cleaner works fine for me.

Failing that, black and white newspaper with windex works treat also. Safe for tints.

old school black and white news papper works a treat, but i think youll find with the current newspappers it will leave smudges because of the oil or maybe ink used in printing them.

An alternate method is warm soapy water with rung out rags use environmentally friendly dish washing liquid. Once over the window, then once over with just the warm water and then once over again with a dry cloth or micro fibre. This way it will help to remove the residue and gunky build up. I found that windex etc gets into the gunk but does not help to remove it but rather degrade or smudge it away. This is not good for muggy looking windows.
Next step if they are still stuffed is to go over them up to five times. You will never see cleaner windows in your life.

Do you use any product on the dash to protect it? I find this adds greatly to the scum issue on the inside of the windscreen.
I use Auto Glym glass cleaner polish. Use it just like any other polish, does an awsome job. We have two cars we display (five hundred thousand trillion finger prints) and this is the best stuff I have used. It works a treat on the outside too, water falls off when it rains and the wipers work better. Can't use it on tint though:-(
I have tried microfibre cloths on the tint, but not really a good result as I find it leaves a residue. Any suggestions????

This is the solution. Get some fine grade steel wool (the kind without the detergent attached). 2 terry towel clothes (similar to babies nappies)

Soak down the screen with windex (anything else is a compromise)
Scrub down the screen with the steel wool then wipe it down with cloth number 1 and then polish clean with cloth number 2.

Learnt this one when I was a car detailer. It makes you windows very, very clean.

For all those that are worried, it doesn't scratch the windows if you get the fine grade stuff and don't try it on the inside on tinted windows.

Thanks y'all. I've got tinted windows on the side/back, might just have to use some elbow grease for that.

This I will have to try. I would have thought it will damage the tint. Thanks for the tip:)

Is yours privacy galss that came from factory? If so, the actual glass is tinted rather than having a tint film stuck onto the glass.

If it is factory privacy glass, using the Auto Glym polish is fine, but if it's stuck on tint, then the polish will be gradually wearing down your tint film.

BTW, Auto Glym is great polish isn't it? It does leave a lot of polish dust, but it's great once that's been taken care of!

massive myth???

i heard a while ago to cut a potato on half and smear it all over the window, then do the soapy water thing. Apparently the starch in the potato does something to the built-up grime.

I have never tried it myself, someone else should give it a go then let us know.

Sounds messy! I wouldn't like to be getting that potato starch off if it dried out!

Used straight metho and a clean tea towel last night, it come up better than before, but the rear window is still a little smudged. You can see it more in the sunlight.

The tea towel come out brown.

I've heard of people using a potato to stop the windows fogging up or to stuff down their budgie smugglers but never for cleaning, every time I go to the beach I stuff one down the back of mine but the girls just laugh at me.........so that doesn't work either:Derisive:
