Best Road in Ozzz

  Top of Page

hello all,

after watching a show of top gear where they took a Porshe, Lambo and Astin, to find the best driving road in the world.

I thought it would be good to hear from everyone regarding best stretch of road in each state, and then the best road in Oz.

3 places i could call good driving roads in vic are;
1. The Black Spur
2. Mt Dandenongs
and 3. The Yarra Bend Park

i havnt driven out of melbourne much so i wouldnt no where else . . . the Yarra Bend Park is short but has long bends you can hit at high speeds, Havnt gone quick down it yet, mainly due to the one time i went there at night i got followed by police for about 20kms and then got pulled over for a roadworthy check and breatho.  But it is a nice stretch of road.

Anywhere else we could put down as "Australias Greatest Roads"

Out West most cruises end up with a run down the zigzag road. This may not be 'the' zigzag road as I havent actually driven it (richo? nik?) but i believe this is the one...

I second The Black Spur

If you can have a drive without getting stuck behind a friggen grandma doing the lot at 40km/h, and then there is the Bikes...

but word of warning i was reading the paper 2 weeks ago and they are carrying out Operation Tree Light or something like that.
Got the plod wearing camo's and sitting in the trees who then radio's to a squad car further down the rd.

Apparently clocked a bike at 267, that's insane if you have ever driven the black spur.

Also its been a while but in SA i remember a place out past Tea Tree Gully, out chain of ponds way, cant remember the name of the Rd but i remember there is like caves in the hills along the way.

Yeah the cops are a bit all over us in the valley, but as long as they get rid of a few bike's im happy:beee: Its the those weekend warriors that give us the bad accident figures and bring the cops onto us anyway.  Personal favorites are St Andrews to kinglake, Healesville to Toolangi (either road) and out past Poweltown towards noojee/neerim. And obviously the nearly/actually 0 degree nights this time of year, frickin yeehaaa :neo::neo::neo::neo::neo::neo::neo::neo::neo::neo::neo::neo:

For the north of Sydney, some of my favourites are
Old Pacific Highway Peats Ridge to Berowra
Galston Road Galston, thru Galston Gorge
Wisemans Ferry to St Albans Settlers Rd (a bit of dirt action)
You need to pick and choose your times to run these roads to avoid the usual tourist traffic, police, bikers etc but a clear run will have you coming back.

APM pine plantation fire trails in the Latrobe Valley area of Victoria, absolutely fantastic rally roads IMO.

Tabone,

I disappointed you missed Arthur Seat in Dromana, apart from being a little short, its sweet.

The black Spur is always a favorite, but i would also second, St Andrews to King Lake. The twisty tight bits are oh so dangerous, but oh so sweet.

Great QLD Roads.....hahahaha.

Perhaps Cunninghams Gap, nice induction due to altitude, nice twists, beautiful sealing, a few slow trucks, perfect slopes, runs past waterfalls and through a rainforest. Unfortunately the odd crucifix.

Definately not competition for Great Ocean, but as for scenery what about Jindy to Perisher during winter?

Ku-Ring-Gai Chase Rd...

called the chase by locals (for obvious reasons)

it has tolls at each end by day, but by night some fast runs can be made...

i don't have the guts/balls to push it any more than 7mins 30sec (toll gate to toll gate) give or take...

my mate did it in just over 6mins in his Silvia...

rock walls on one side, tree lined drops on the other...

maybe not the best, but good none the less...

Cairns-Port douglas, senic and a good drive.
Western edge of Somerset Dam through to Kilkoy, fantastic drive.
The Great Green Way between Ingham and Cardwell (A1). Senic and good quick blat except for the caravans.
Maryborough-Rainbow Beach, through the pine plantations and alongside the Wide bay Miilitary Training Area, absolute cracker of a road except for the logging trucks.
Hinterland throught to Beechmont, awsome.
Townsville-Charters Towers (Flinders Highway), my favorite, and a great run at the speed limit.:scout:

You forgot Church Street, Marv, and Mulgoa Road... lol

I'd say that the Northern Stretch of Putty Road has to be some of the nicest driving road I've been on, ever.
