hahahaha beez neez, i dont mind it for a honey beer but its not the greatest i dont find it special but every now and then i have a drop of it. knapstein has a very mild taste of honey or something saweet i havent had enough to actually spot it , its really a good beer hard to find and not cheap but its great when u get it. bee sting is a really good honey beer great taste but not over the top, its a good combination of the beer taste and honey. beez neez really isnt that great once youve had these.

Seeing that Beez neez is WA based is it actually now owned by japanese?

Re: Beer thread

I'll drink any beer if someones giving it to me, pretty much any alcohol for that matter.

Generally buy Carlton Draught, sometimes Crownies, sometimes Hahn Premium Dry, whatever really. As long as there is a suitable alcohol content im happy.

I dont rate it now, although a few have suggested bee sting. Quite hard to find in Perth, or so I have been told

Wow, just wow. Even a low quality taste in spirits? Wow. You made me read this on Australia day? Bastard. That Beam better be Small Batch. At a minimum, get yourself some Woodford Reserve... Please. For you, not for me.

Knappstein is actually crafted by a winemaker, she has won a few awards for her Reds in the past. I think the beer is a bit heavy for the style it is trying to acheive, far too much sweetness on the front of the palette. The thick oily mouth feel makes it quite enjoyable though, it just seems 'too complex' for the style.

Matilda Bay Brewery makes no beer whatsoever in WA anymore, Beez Neez is completely brewed and run through the pasturiser over east. Same with Bohemian (not bad if bought cheaply) and the rest of the line. This has been the case for at least a year, maybe two. No, not Japanese owned.

Squires is run through the same bottling line as Vodka Cruisers! Though I will admit a Golden Ale at the end of the day is quite nice, the Amber is again too sweet for my tastes.

I love beer.

Gulpener has been getting put away quite readily of late in my house, along with the range of Weihenstepheners (worlds oldest commercial brewery).

My latest favourite is John Bull Bitter, comes in a 568mL (pint) sized bottle - very enjoyable and doesn't tie you down to a food gr

oup like a chewy stout or a hoppy pilsener.

I really love beer.

Let's keep this thread going, great idea. Maybe when you try a new beer, post up your thoughts here? Bit of a pic too - eg.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g219/naroeone/SaisonRegal.jpg

This Saison Regal is regarded as the king of all beers, comes in a 250mL bottle. It is just perfectly balanced, for my money it tastes like an English hopped pale ale. Great drinking.

Also, I urge anyone who really is getting into beer to buy yourself a proper tulip beer glass, like the stella tulip I've pictured. For aroma, even a big wine glass if you've got one is better than a straight glass - or worse - drinking from the bottle!

Cheers,
Nik

Re: Beer thread

I can understand the interest in beer tasting but I'm not too fussed either...

Give me a few ice cold Ted's (Tooheys Extra Dry) straight from the bottle and I'm happy.

Of course I don't mind Asahi or Stella if drinking import beer, sometimes even partial a Monteiths Zesty Radler Bier. Being sweet and easy drinking beer purists would hate it but damn it goes down easily. :good:

Re: Beer thread

I have to say for an Australia day beer thread, I'm a little disappointed in the lack of support for Aussie brews.
I know James Squire has been suggested, as has cascade but what about some of our other great drops?
James Boag has yet to make a beer that isn't of international standard.  I think the premium could be one of the better beers worldwide.  Personally I think beer is a tad like wine that some beers are definitely better suited depending on how they're served and what they're served with.
I wouldn't ever buy Carlton Draught in a bottle, bt I think it lends itself very well to being a tap beer.  Better than, say VB for instance.  That and every barman can pour them properly.  Sometimes I feel like telling the barperson to stop and I'll pour it myself when I order a Kilkenny or any of the nitrogen bubbled beers.
For the record my top 5:
James Boags Premium
Becks
Kilkenny Drought
Corona (with a Lime and Lime only) when I'm in the mood.
Whitbier (was made by CUB for a period a few years back, I haven't seen it recently)
I would also like to add that I would be quite satisfied if every Tooheys brewery worldwide exploded and burnt every recipe they have developed

Nice work mate, which drop are you sampling? My favourite is probably the pilsener.

No worries mate. For a lot of people like me though, we are sick and tired of going to a really nice restaurant, paying 50/head and having to order some s**t like Becks or Corona.

I can enjoy a cold CD (or any draught) at the end of the day mate, but I honestly believe beer is the new wine. The family business that I work in is a winery, and I think taking some of the basics of wine tasting into beer tasting is just a natural progression. We have winemakers making beer more and more nowadays, and in Western Australia we consume more premium craft beer than any other state - by a HUGE margin (ayee go WA!). Possibly is directly linked to the disposable income of most WA households being so high at the moment (yay for mines).

I would hate the same stigma of snobbery to be associated with craft beer, but I think it is important that we support the surge of local boutique breweries in Australia.

I appreciate your comment on the Tooheys, apart from Tooheys Old which, for the money, really serves a purpose.

I honestly have trouble with the top five list of yours though mate, I would strongly urge you to pony up and try some other beers.

I drink at Cowaramup Brewery every single afternoon, there English twisted Pilsener is absolutely sublime. Their Special Pale Ale - not smokey or burnt in its soft coffee characters, with a mouth feel of a strong lager.

I don't think if someone is heading into the world of fine craft beers they should start with Australian beers. Getting a good knowledge of each style, from where it originates, will enhance your experience of the Australian versions of each beer.

For example, a cloudy wheat beer like a Feral White can only really be appreciated after trying a Weihenstephener Weiss, or a La Goulaise, or similar.

I am terribly patriotic (see my bogan car flags thread), but I think it is fair to say Europe really are the pioneers of beer. That said, we make beer for our climate, and our lifestyle.

I love beer.

Cheers,
Nik

N00B question.
Do Europeans drink beer warm?
Or is it that we have ours particularly cold?

Re: Beer thread

It is a bit of a misconception that Europeans have their beer 'warm' - most parts of Europe are a far colder climate than Australia, and the idea of 'room temperature' is an old one. This is originated from places where 6/7 degrees is the ambient room temperature, a standard fridge is about 8 degrees.

The colder a liquid the less flavour it will impart to the palette, you'll find if a brewery has their taps iced up, the beer is too cold.

Beers like CD, Becks, Heineken are best drunk super cold, as they are really just throw away - low flavour beverages. Something like a full Knappstein Premium should be drunk at around 10 degrees.

Some European beers have a temperature sticker on the label that will go 'green' or a certain colour to ensure you are at the correct drinking temperature.

Cheers,
Nik

Re: Beer thread

Ahh, i was think about that room temperature deal.

To be honest, I've only ever tasted VB, Tooheys, Carlton draught and so on.
And i thought they all tasted like Sh1t. I can understand it being an acquired taste, but so is bourbon, and on my 3rd sip of that stuff it was all good.

Is there somthing about those stated beers that makes them like that, i guess i'd say there very bitter. Almost makes me gag on it.

Re: Beer thread

Actually, they all have quite a lot of redisual sugar, VB is like drinking Coca Cola in terms of sugar levels. It's about as bitter as honey.

I really hate to make it all sound complicated, and I agree, if you like it; drink it. But I think we can go further into beer, it's such an iconic Australian beverage, why not have the best?

Do you drink your Bourbon straight?

Re: Beer thread

Yes i do, depending on my mood.
Generally on a Friday night, i just cant drink it straight. It will knock me out in 30mins. So being one to drink to enjoy it, i mix it with coke.

What is it the use to give it that distinct flavor it has?
Perhaps knowing that it may give me a chance at finding a beer i can stand.
