by alexxx on 13-08-08 05:47 PM mechanics are one of the worst payed trades, very handy to do your own work but the pay is shocking in comparison to the amount of work that you do! unless you get to a service managers level. |

by thatsgoodsquishy on 13-08-08 05:58 PM My cousin was a mechanic, now he is in the mines doing a sparky apprenticeship. Young bloke at work got 3 years in an quit cause he hated it, now he's doing a nothing job he prefers. I went to uni with a bloke who was a mechanic but was over it and completely changing direction. Im not saying i wouldn't do it, but i think ya have to be really keen. I used to love working on my cars but now i rather be driving em, i would be really sick of it if i had done a trade i think. But if ya really keen and sure its what ya wont to do go for it. If ya end up running ya own workshop ya could make decent money, hard work though. |

by LE7SGO on 13-08-08 06:37 PM baisc mechanics like alexxx said are paid poorley. the local head mechanics at my subaru dealership are paid around $22 an hour i was told, which isnt that impressive after many years in the trade. but if you were great at your work and did performance and what not i geuss you could go higher wage wise. but if its your passion then why not. or become a diesel mechanic get paid decently then go over to the mines and get paid 150K plus |

by NIK022 on 13-08-08 10:37 PM Ha, yeah mechanics is hell fun (sarcasm), except for when you write off, say a Impreza or Corrolla or Accord, whichever Maque, and have to pay the insurance out of your pay. |

that's what i was thinking of doing... i read that you can even join the army reserve as a mechanics apprentice and you will still get qualified that way... that may or may not be my best option as it means i can still keep my "well paying" job and become a mechanic at the same time... i guess i just feel like i'll enjoy being a mechanic a whole bunch more than i do sitting at a computer all day talking to idiots about stuff they'll never understand... |

theoretically, i'll be doing more work and keeping busy, so the days should go faster... that is enough to outway the negatives of sore hands and back (looks like i won't be stopping the chiropractic appointments either way... huh?) |

Chiro?! Go see a physio and get your problem fixed instead of getting your back cracked twice a month. |

by befour on 14-08-08 01:48 PM Hmm if you have an existing condition with your back then I would probably really do some hard thinking about becoming a mechanic, you will only make the problem worse......... but yeah upto you dude. |

that's a good point that i didn't consider... hmmm... makes the decision tougher... are there any courses you can do that will teach you mechanic know how...?? |

Re: becoming a mechanic |

by befour on 14-08-08 02:22 PM Hmm not sure.... If I were you I would probably see a Dr or something of the sort and ask their opinion on the matter, chances are there are some form of back brace (the soft wetsuite looking thingy not the hard plastic ones) that you could possibly wear to work and just be very conscious of what you are lifting and how, most heavy things you do will all be done with engine cranes now anyways. |

by NIK022 on 14-08-08 06:16 PM The heaviest lifting I've seen in a workshop is taking out the bins. There'd be an abundance of aids to keep yourself active with your condition, although it sort of rules out the ADF. And I believe there would be some courses available through an open learning centre, perhaps a mechanical basics course offered nearby. If that fails than just get friendly with a mechanic and hang out on weekends and work on your cars. I'm lucky to know a lot of guys with in the Subaru dealerships up here, but start networking down there mate. |

by powers493 on 14-08-08 07:15 PM TAFE offers pre-vocational automotive courses for light vehicles at all the tafes with automotive facilities, there are a few around. I think u can do courses from six months to two years depending on the hours u do a week. I did a tvet course while i was still at school which was 240 hours ( pretty much a year if u do one day a week). I can give you a list of the modules you would be likely to do if u did the course if ur interested |

now there's an idea, you'd make ADF standards easy and be on a cool 30k while you train.
I much prefer it over sitting at a computer all day, more of a challenge
ahaha but its worth it
