Basic Libety questions:

  Top of Page

Hi all,

I just had some basic questions on Liberty's that i thought some of you'se could answer:

What is the difference between a B4 and a GT ?
Which model Liberty's are STI's?
What is a TT?
Is there any difference between Legacy and Liberty?

Cheers,

Tony

What is the difference between a B4 and a GT ?

Internationally

Gen 1 - BC/BF: Turbo Sedan and Wagon both called RS Turbo
Gen 2 – BD/BG: Standard Turbo Sedan called RS, Standard Turbo Wagon called GT. Special editions with Bilstein suspension were RSB and GT-B respectively
Gen 3 – BE/BH: Turbo Sedan was B4 RSK, Turbo Wagon was GT or GT-B Touring Wagon. N/A sedan was B4 and wagon was know as the Touring Wagon. (Subaru introduced the "B4" label to identify ALL sedans from the touring wagon)
Gen 4 – BL/BP: Turbo Sedan was a B4 2.0GT and the wagon 2.0GT Touring Wagon. N/A sedan was B4 and wagon was know as the Touring Wagon with the engine spec included in the name. ie: B4 2.0R or 3.0R Spec B Touring Wagon.
Gen 5 – BM/BR: Turbo Sedan was a B4 2.5GT and the wagon 2.5GT Touring Wagon. N/A sedan is still known as the B4 and wagon is the Touring Wagon with the engine spec included in the name. ie: B4 2.5R or 3.6R Spec B Touring Wagon.

Australia

Gen 1 - BC/BF: Turbo Sedan and Wagon both called RS Turbo. NA had the LX, GL, GX and Heritage
Gen 2 – BD/BG: Turbo variants were not offered in Australia. N/A’s were GL, GX, RX and Heritage as well as special editions such as the RX Bilstein
Gen 3 – BE/BH: Turbo Sedan was B4 with no Turbo Wagon offered. N/A were GX and RX
Gen 4 – BL/BP: Turbo Sedan and Wagon were called GT. N/A sedan and wagon were known by their spec. ie: 2.0R Sedan or 3.0RB Touring Wagon
Gen 5 – BM/BR: Turbo Sedan and Wagon were called GT. N/A sedan and wagon were known by their spec. ie: 2.0R Sedan or 3.0RB Touring Wagon. ie: 2.5R Sedan or 3.6R Spec B Touring Wagon.

Which model Liberty's are STI's?

I believe the Subaru Legacy S401 and S402 are the only actual STI Legacy available. The Gen 4 Liberty/Legacy was available in a "tuned by STI" but not essentially a true STI like their WRX STI counterpart.

What is a TT?

Twin Turbo

Is there any difference between Legacy and Liberty?

Subaru Legacy (world wide) = Subaru Liberty (Australia). Same car different name. Different domestic markets have slight variations, ie: JDM, AUDM and USDM have subtle differences tailored to their markets. Body and interior parts are interchangeable with the same generation variants but there are "face lifted revisions" which have minor exterior differences ie: bumpers, lights and grills etc

Internationally the Gen 4 Legacy B4 is the turbo variant sedan and GT for the wagon. The gen 2 turbo variant sedan was the RS or RSB and the GT or GT-B for the wagon, gen 3 turbo variant sedan is RSK and GT or GT-B for wagon. In Australia the Gen 3 turbo sedan was the B4 with no wagon version offered and all gen 4 turbos (wagon and sedan) are called GT.

Just FYI, the 'B' in GT-B and RSB = Bilstein. Representing the suspension

So the only B4 is a Gen 3 sedan?

yeah in Australia the only B4 is the gen 3 turbo sedan. internationally every sedan (turbo or n/a) from gen 3 to gen 5 is known as a B4.

Legacy have slightly different grilles, taillight/garnish setups (Legacys are darker), rear foglights work, seats (B4 RSK), headlights (Gen2 GT/GT-B/Rs/RSB), etc.

They are all the things that Aussie Liberty drivers put on their Liberty's to make them slightly different so I guess you could say they are 'better'. But obviously if you want to keep a Legacy genuine, parts are harder to come by ..well the cars themselves are hard to come by full stop as they have been imported...

JDM Legacy's also often have features that the rest of the world didn't get such as power folding and heated mirrors, keyless entry on earlier models, projector head lights, turn lights in the fog light assembly, interior lights on the door cards etc.

Yeah mate, the front bar is an OEM Legacy (Series 2) GT-B bar which is the same as the Liberty (series 2) RX/Heritage front bar.

This grill is the OEM JDM Legacy "L7" grill

And this is a modified AUDM grill with the inserts removed and mesh on the back

My Liberty has the same front bar (it's an MY98 Heritage) but no foglights due to the FMIC piping. The grill is an aftermarket Hippo_Sleek grill

Oh ok, thanks smile

Thats very tempting, might have to start saving! My GX front bar, still tidy, just doesnt quite do it for me.

Love what you did with the mesh!
