B4 Plumbing issues

  Top of Page

Having Vacuum/Boost issues and i think the plumbing has been messed up a bit. Found some good info on some sites about plumbing but much better to see how it all comes togeather in real life. Anyone got a few mins to spare for a meet and compare to see if my plumbing is messed up or not? IN MELBOURNE (PS Will be away 24th - 30th Dec)
Thanks.

Ok, symptoms are. Unsteady vacuum especially on cold start, reads (from boost/vacuum gauge connected to inlet manifold) ~ -16 to -12 until the auto-iddeler kicks in where sometimes idle jumps up to 2000RPM. On warm run vac seems to sit on -16. Spool from primary and secondary seem to work but vod seems excessive and boost from primary and secondary seem low; primary 8/9psi, secondary 10-13psi. When vac seems especially low, engine seems to shake or wobble. Really stumped on this one and dont know where to look, heard of problems such as boost solenoid, differential pressure sensor, actuator/wastgate issues, brake booster check valve, PCV, but not sure. Another thing that i picked up on and not sure if this is a cause of the problem is the carbon canister sensor has the plastic broken and had to plug off the vaccum lines either side, was thinking of removing the carbon canister system altogeather but dont know where to begin with that too.

The engine had a rebuild about 15000kms ago and not sure if they reasembled everything correctly.
Pneumatic setup looks a bit like this:
- Vacuum line with restrictor pill from inlet manifold tee'd to 1/ primary turbo wastegate actuator 2/ boost solenoid
- Boost solenoid output tee'd to 1/ air intake (after maf) 2/ BBoD (Exhaust valve solenoid)
BBoD looks untouched and should be as stock. Ill try and get some pics up when i can.

Any tips or advice appreciated. Thanks

Has this been a problem since the rebuild? (15000kms ago)or a more recent development?
Has the MAF been cleaned or serviced recently?

Recent problem. Subaru changed the AFM sensor to try and fix the problem, which didnt do anything.

As this is a recent development then the plumbing post rebuild was OK.Since AFM has been replaced then I suspect a leak in the system.
Have fault codes been checked?

idle hunting could be either of a few things,
shitty AICV , leaky/stuck PCV valve , split on the intake tract, leaking exhaust manifold , shitty front 02 sensor, even a coolant temp sensor can do this.
even a MAP sensor

Thats true. yep codes have been checked and nothing came up... which i thought was a bit odd. thx for the imput, ill check vacuum line and air intake for cracks or leaks.

Good suggestions, ill do some checks. any suggestion on checking the air intake cause it seems to be buried beneath the inlet manifold and looks like a pain to access. Like Anachronox asked, code check came back with nothing, which if is right would mean not a sensor, right? good suggestions about sticky valves, try n check the aicv and pcv. Thx

I second the motion for leak mine had an up and down idle for ages then pinging got bad took off inter cooler and found a crack in induction pipe near primary turbo
I am putting replacement on now

nice intake, ive seen then before, resonable price too. Seems like a bit of a headache job though, gotta take the intake manifold off right? seems to be quite buried
