Axle stands

  Top of Page

Hey guys just want to know what type of axle stands you use. I am very hesitant to crawl under the car unless i have a good set of stands. Usually I use a couple of jacks and a alot of bricks but since its xmas time i thought i'd make life easier for myself. I know the good ones can range up to a few hundred bucks but I dont know if thats overkill or not. Repco and similar stores sell pin type stands that claim to support 1200kgs which i assume is per stand. Are these dodgy?

We've got a couple of cheapish sets from autoone here. An old trick is to also leave the jack under the car as a backup, so that if the stands fail for what ever reason, the jack takes the weight...
Personally I prefer to use ramps, but I have to take the front bar off the lib to get her on them :beee:

I'll be spending some $$$ @ supacrap this xmas..They have some good deals on at the moment so I might as well buy some stands too..

I always leave my tyres under the car as well for precautions

I was told its better to get teepee styled ones like these:

rather than the flat based pin ones like these

Dont think i've ever seen the teepee style ones at any of the major retailers.

we've got two. these are fricken solid. when i needed a hoist, we went to supercheap to get their '2 tonne' hoist, it weighed nothing, my dad luaphed and left the store. so obviously ask yourself if you think that it could hold that weight. and kosti...what you said literaly saved my life this year.

what ever you do DO NOT use bricks or other dodgy things, i have heard many horror stories about guys who have used them to work under their car, and a fatality occured.

to be on the safe side when using the stands, place a tire next to them incase the car does slip off, and you will still have enough room to get out.

EDIT: just read kostis post:P
