aquiring a b4 liberty

  Top of Page

hey everyone,
i currently drive a golf tdi and I've found a guy wanting to swap it for a 01 b4 liberty. the b4 has done 200km, however the motor was replaced at 150k ( receipts sighted) and the major service ( timing belt, cv's, clutch and heaps of other crap to the tune of 4k) has just been done 4 weeks ago. She's stock except for an MRT TBE. Just looking for feedback on high km b4's am i buying a ticking time bomb? or being that all the BIG stuff has been done, am i getting a car that will cruise for some time before needing more major work. Sure any older vehicle can have problems due to its history. But as a ballpark idea how are the scoobies when the k's get high. Ive had an earlier model liberty non turbo before and the auto went at 180k. i definitely don't thrash cars but i don't mind a bit of spirited driving from time to time.

ideas?

if it has a ECUTEK tune stay away , look for shitty mods, you want to see a stock bov and take it for a good drive , make sure it doesnt boost cut or ping bad , check brakes , and suspension , should be ok otherwise

full exhaust? if so it will need a tune , that will cost around 600 from a flash tuner or chip torque do a really good job,

Hmm it's been running for 3 years with the exhaust. It's runs really well too so maybe int has been tuned. Hopefully not by mrt. Did you note any difference it's the wrx top mount ?? They don't look very expensive. I wanna keep the car pretty much stock. Mainly due to reliabilty  nd I'm not into racing or anything. Just want a reliable quick daily drive for uni and work. Ii don't wanna be spending thousand of dollars to gain a few kw. Maybe some lowered springs and a tune if necessary. I don't want a cai as I don't want want intake noise and I don't want a blow off valve.  Any other Mods you'd recommend. It doesn't have any shitty mods. It's an import motor that was done with full receipts 3 years ago. The motor was 2900 and 2000 of other work was done at that time. Then 8 weeks ago the guy has spent 4k on timing belts. Arp head studs. Water pump. Thermostat, alloy radiator, clutch , cv joints. And bits of other work. The guy was going to sell the motor and drop and sti motor in. But he's buying my golf to work up instead.

bug onwards wrx/sti intercoolers wont fit, without mods , serious ones , they sit futher forward and the B4 throttle body sitts futher back ,plus the bov wont fit and the plumb back arangement is different, my B4 is a single turbo aswell. , a hyperflow one that suits a GC8 will fit ,you just have to bolt your elbows up to it ,

this is that the two little turbos look like tongue
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i333/ganguskarn/0b84fbff.jpg
as you can c my b4 isnt really a b4 now:P

silicon intake hoses from the turbo to the intercooler is a good mod , Dump Pipes, Strut braces & sway bars depending on the wheels WRX 4 pots

aslo dont try manual boost controllers either , they will confuse the ecu and it will have issues. if u wanna run more boost get it done threw a tune

change oil every 10k use 10w40 synth any thing thinner shit causes problems mainly nosies , just remember the bearings on the turbos are oil feed and sticky crap oil is not good for them or the motor.
atleast a can of upper engine cleaner every service too to keep those homo solenoids in order

bilstiens arent great fans of lowered springs either had a mate shag his billys from king lows, if u wanna adjust the ride hight , coilovers.....

Great cars, so much fun to drive. You'll read alot of peoplel complaining about VOD. Once you learn to drive around it, when giving it a bit It's fine. Most of the time when I drive mine I change at 4000rpm at least till the road opens up.

the vod wont worry to much, im a pretty tame driver, and like you said ill also be shifting around 4k to keep it economical. ive been driving a flashtuned golf tdi which had more than adeqaute performance for my liking. so adding 40kw at 4 wheels to that will be more thane xciting enough for me.

the VOD was fun , while draggin some people ,i just didnt like seeing boost at 1900rpm coasting , eats the fuel
atm i have full boost by 3100 19PSI all the way to redline with the 20g housing, great fun im getting an extra 100kms pertank single turbo and running a race/rally computer

Yeah, the whole VOD thing is so overdone. I barely notice it and as above, it can be fun when going up against someone smile My biggest thing with the TT setup is that the most fun power is way up in the rev range.

What everyone above said. If it was well looked after it will likely be a great car to own. I love my B4 smile

VOD is overrated, unless you feel like racing everyone then you wont notice it. The other issue is pinging in hot weather, but I just run it on BP Ultimate and haven't noticed anything nasty yet. An ECU tune can help with both of these issues, if you are keen. It is good you have a mate that owned one before, I went into it with no knowledge of Subaru's at all. Glad I did though it's been a fun car to own.

I have STi Pinks in mine and haven't had any issues regarding my Bilsteins? Only about a 1" drop but I like the height, I can get on the driveway this way tongue

I won't be racing anyone ! Haha. Id be to scared for the motor to go pop if I did. I'll see how it goes but I'll probably get the tune done after Uni starts.. See how much cash flow I have by then. I'll be running it on ultimate also !

What do you mean by getting your car on the driveway ?

Friendly bunch of people you lot are. The vw crew only talk about touch screen navigation and what option boxes they ticked on there new gti !!!

Jamie's taking about my B4 fellas. But as he's quite young, going from diesel golf to B4 may stretch him a bit, so has decided not to go ahead.  My B4 is getting its STI engine done (this week).

Murph' i'll get the $ for the grill tomorrow and i'm working on getting a rim for you smile

Next time the B4 comes up for sale, it will not be a swap for a Golf, rather another STI or something exotic : )

this is true guys,
the extra costs of fuel ( my car uses between 4.2 and 6.3l per 100km no matter what i do) extra insurance and extra maintenance costs, not to mention the modification bug ( id already planned a tmic, fuel pump, autotch tune and cai) was just going to end up with me never saving more than $100 in the bank for a long time, I'm a uni student etc so I'm going to let darko hold onto his b4 and work on my 'big boy' future plans

great bunch of guys here and keep boostin'

tune not required as was done so at time of exhaust. Fuel pump i'm sure has been done and a TMIC could have been worked in (i have an STI one sitting in my garage).

Not to worry.
