Great. So we can expect even bigger cock-ups/delays for the "Big" upgrade then .Nah, kidding, it's good to have it back! |

An efficient database migration to add new features to a website that's only real feature is a forum, realistically; shouldn't be that difficult. If all the upgrades were laid out/debugged prior to installing the (new database or keeping with existing and just adding features?) then the downtime should be minimal. To be fair there is always unexpected/unseen errors so you could allow a few days to cover that. All depends on how committed the sys admin is and whether or not they'd be working long hours to get it back up and running. I did this sorta **** at uni, and to a lesser extent a couple of times for some private websites, shouldn't be all that difficult (that being said, I still have nightmares about MySQL lol), depending upon the time put into it. A fortnight is too long.... but hey theres no shortage of websites out there to occupy our time for two weeks I guess

As much as I'd like to. I really just don't have the time/committment nor motivation to staring at code and swearing for hours at a time again. That in a way is why i'm not working with computers now. And also, I never said it could be done in a day. I said the downtime could be minimised to a day or few IF all the work had been carried out and debugged prior to the upgrade/migration. Weeks, more like months worth of work in that alone; assuming the admin only works on it sporadically. That, and my therapist told me to avoid SQL at all costs .

Nuko, the upgrade is not purely migrating forum databases, it is moving the entire site in a different focus so its no longer a website "that's only real feature is a forum". And for those wondering, the downtime will be hopefully kept to a minimum, and no it shouldn't be as long as a fortnight. Hopefully a few days at the most. PS SQL is better than any of the alternatives

by MY02B4 on 25-02-08 10:50 AM I appreciate the time and effort that goes into maintaining this forum. I've used phpBB before and yes it can be a PITA. If planned properly, you can spread the down time over a few days rather than all in one hit. On top of that you can have a planned schedule of the update so we are all aware of whats going on rather than post messages only to find out nobody can reply. The wrx.com.au mob got theirs up and runnings really quick and we're better than them |
