Advice on engine swap for a Liberty GX

  Top of Page

Hey guys, first post, looks like people here know what they're on about, so hoping someone might be able to give me some advice on putting a new engine in my much loved Gen1 liberty. It's a GX model that originally had an EJ22 engine in it. The previous owner swapped it out for an EJ25 from a 98 Liberty. I'm not really sure what that entailed...going to get in touch with him and find out.

Basically, I overheated it really badly when a cooling hose burst, and according to my mechanic the cylinder heads are warped, they've lost compression and one of the cylinders is filling with water. His diagnosis was that there's nothing I can do for it. It's since become a non-starter. I love the car, though, and the previous owner had spent a lot on suspension and handling upgrades, etc, so I don't want to chuck it just yet. What are my options for putting another engine in it?

From what I can gather I could get another EJ25 for about $1300...what about turbo engines? Would the EJ20 from the Gen 1 Liberty RS be a feasible transplant, or am I looking at more trouble than its worth? If anyone's got any experience with this or advice, that would be awesome! Cheers guys!
