A guy with a very basic Liberty 2Gen to improve.

  Top of Page

G'day. I have a cherry red '95 Liberty GX that is a tad underpowered. I'm looking to fix that, probably with an FMIC and turbo. I would love a WRX conversion but I think they're too expensive and I imagine front-cut engines would be fraught with flaws. Plus it seems like the only place that does said conversions is way, way up north (AM Auto in Noosaville). I'd like to get some gold rims (I hope they work with the red duco). I also really need a racing seat, so I can sit lower (I'm 6'7" tall). Well, there's my little story. I hope to learn much from this great forum.
Peace.

P.S.Extremely obscure question: Would somebody please tell me what size rims the Liberty 2Gen wheel arches can accommodate? I would like 19" wheels, but I don't want the tyres to rub against the wheel alcove when I turn corners.

Hey Mate,

Welcome to the site

Firstly you'll definitely be able to find someone down your way to do a conversion for you. Get in touch with some of the ACT members and someone might be able to point you in the right direction. Also Sydney is far closer to you than QLD. There are four places that would do a conversion for you within a few hundred meters of where i'm sitting right now and there must be literally hundreds of places in Sydney that could do it for you. No problem...

Secondly you should read through some of these threads. They discuss the pros and cons of turboing an N/A EJ engine. Read through it and make up your own mind but i think you'll find that a wrx conversion is definitely the way to go...your gx engine just wont handle it.

This thread is talking about mods you can do to an N/A ej engine to get the most bang for your buck

Dunno if he is on these forums but Datman from the RSLC is local to you and more than capable of performing a conversion.

Also get some pics up. Don't see too many red gen2s around. From your avatar it looks a lot like the blitzen red.

Dear Herman,

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll get in touch with Datman. I'll also post some photos of my car. I should say that my avatar is not my own car; it's a photo of a Liberty GT lifted from some car review. It does have the same red duco as mine though. The similarities end there; mine lacks colour-coded mirrors, side protectors, spoiler, driving lights, etc....

Peace.

Dear aekOne,

Thanks for your reply. After having read most of those threads, it's pretty clear that it's not such a good idea to bolt a turbo onto my EJ220. So I will find some place in Sydney that can convert my engine (either that or this Datman fella). This forum really is a blessing (not that I'm religious at all).

Your photo looks pretty cool. It'd be really nice to have a Liberty RX like you. I'd also like to drag down George St., if only NSW Police weren't exponentially tougher with their laws than ACT ones, and if only there weren't such a high risk of getting about three red lights before hitting 100km/h. haha.

Peace.

Hey Mate,

Sounds like you’ve made a wise decision! If you end up doing it in Sydney check out these guys:

A and B Motor Sports and speak with Frank- http://www.aandbmotorsports.com/main.html

They did my conversion and do some very nice work. There where three other libs getting converted at the same time I did mine so they’re pretty familiar with Subaru’s.

Hahaha George St hot laps mate big_smile

Hmm... tempting. Are you talking about an RS, RS25 or RS30 B4 engine? How much would it cost (including engine, gearbox and all labour costs needed to install them)?

Some photos of my exquisitely beautiful Liberty. And AekOne, thanks for the referral. It's good to know a lot of places can do engine conversions for Liberties. I will most likely get something done in Q1 or Q2 2009, when I have more money, haha.

P.S. To Evil VZ-T, I'm sorry but currently I'm afraid I can't afford an engine conversion. Thanks all the same for the  great offer.

The gear box and engine will fit without any problems

You should be able to get the full conversion done for around $3000 + the cost of the motor & gearbox (or halfcut). That includes the mechanical swap and re-wiring

Check out AM Auto’s website for more info on conversions

I don't think 19s will fit. If they did, it would look really awkward on a stock GX. I say, go with 17s or 18s and hope you don't get a tight ass cop that will defect you.

Aurelius,
Thanks a lot for answering my obscure question. You're right, 19" wheels will probably look awkward, not to mention crass. So I'll probably think about 18"s or 17"s. Hopefully the bloke at the wheel shop will allow me to briefly bung on one 19 incher just to see what it looks like. After that, some black caliper paint!

Peace.

Youd don't realise how small the brakes are until you can see them.
