97 GX to Turbo conversion.

  Top of Page

Hi guys, first post here, looking for some advice.

I've got a 97 GX model and I'm looking into turbo'ing it. What I want is something that I can use for a daily driver without chewing through too much fuel but has a considerable boost for when I want to have a bit of fun. My engine has 255,000 on the clock so I'm assuming a swap out is my best option. What engine/model should i be looking at? Is it even worth it? And what sort of advice would anyone like to give me? Not exactly the most knowledgeable person when it comes to this sort of stuff so anything would be great.

I did mine back in late 2005.
Back when I did it, the car was still worth a bit of coin, and as I'd blown the original engine, I didn't want to scrap the car, so I ended up going with a closed deck WRX conversion and its been soooo reliable!!
The only problems I've had in 6 years have been the radiator header tank leaking, and a split clutch cable, and I don't really give my car alot of mechanical attention.

However, to get the job done properly, so it'll be as reliable as a standard car, your looking at over $5-6k (anyone who says they can do it for less will probably do a sh!thouse job)

I dont know how much work your capable of doing yourself, but your gonna need to spend $2-4K on a frontcut containing engine/gearbox/diff. Then you'll need someone to splice in the wiring loom for the engine into your dash wiring, then you'll need either the bonnet vent conversion done, or a front mount intercooler, and you'll also need a new exhaust system.
My conversion took 3 weeks solid, and that was by Al in QLD who is a factory trained Subaru technician and a conversion expert who had all of the parts required on the shelf, and cost me just under $9K back then, but that also included optional brake, suspension and steering upgrades.

Al posted a brief 'How-To' here: http://www.rslibertyclub.org/forums/sho … actory-ecu
There's also some shots of my conversion process here: http://s103.photobucket.com/albums/m159 … ?start=all

Do you really want to spend that much time and money on your car? Or would you be better off selling it and buying something else?

Anyways, if you have any other questions, feel free to shoot me a PM.

The above covered it pretty well.
If you're mechanically minded, then you can do MOST of the work yourself. I'd highly highly super strongly suggest you send the wiring to Al to splice it together for you. This is where anything that can go wrong will go wrong.
I did mine 2 years ago now. The only problem I've had is it monstered its way through a clutch in about 9 months. I did everything except the wiring with the help of a few mates in 2 days, so mechanically it's not difficult at all.

THIS^^^ times 1000000!! It is just not worth the hassle of doing it yourself.

Also, dont forget you'll need to get it engineered which will cost upwards of $600.
I'm also hearing rumors that new laws coming in later this year may mean that vehicles that weren't originally turbo optioned will not pass engineering with a turbo. (IE you cant convert a non-turbo to a turbo and hope to get it through engineering)Only rumors though, and I'm not sure how much truth there is behind them.
