2010 Subaru Outback - 3.6L Flat Six Option

  Top of Page

Hi,

Thought this may interest some of you. It interests me.

AutoBlog wrote:

Yesterday, Subaru unveiled its new Legacy sedan, a vehicle that is pivotal not just in its own right, but because it also forms the basis for the softroader stiltswagon seen here. It only makes sense that Subaru chose to unveil its new Outback here this morning, as the very first model debuted here in the Big Apple some 15 years ago.

Predictably, the all-wheel drive Outback's running gear remains pure Legacy, and as such, it has grown similarly. Interior volume is up eight percent thanks in part to a 2.8-inch longer wheelbase (which also adds nearly four inches of rear legroom) and a two-inch wider footprint. Despite these gains, Subie officials claim the 2010 model is actually shorter overall. It also rides a bit higher, with ground clearnce swelling to 8.7 inches. Not only is this growth part of a strategy to combat upsized family sedans from Toyota, Honda, Chevrolet and Mazda, the move also allows the Outback to distance itself from popular Forester that also got biggie-sized with its last redesign.

The new model will be available in the buyer's choice of a 2.5-liter, normally aspirated flat-four giving 170 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque (backed by one of two new transmissions: a six-speed manual or Subie's "Lineartronic" CVT) or a 3.6-liter flat-six (256 hp and 247 pound-feet) paired to a conventional five-speed automatic. Regardless of which engine is specified, the fuel tank grows to 18.5 gallons (from 16.9), and regular fuel is all that's required.

Follow the jump for more, including Subaru's official press release, and check out the new Outback in our high-res gallery below.

I've said since the start I like the new shape, a bit American in the concept, but I think they've finished off nicely. Very impressed.

Cheers,
Nik

Reminds me of the Tribeca with the extra height and chunkiness. It keeps coming up however, that the Aus version will be toned down a bit.

It would bet great to see Subaru try and compete with the Nissan GTR and make a Flat 6 3.6L Twin Turbo!
But i cant say im a fan of the new outback, i hope they do a better job of the Legacy/Liberty.

Sorry but i don't like either of the new models. The out back looks to american and the liberty looks like a bloody ford mondeo. What are they thinking?? Looks as sporty or sexy as a pile of cr@p.

My thoughts

By the figures the 3.6 is a good improvement in torque which hopefully is lower down in the rev range than the current 3.0. The 3.0 is a great engine but has to be worked to get it going. Things don't start happening, even with a V-tune, until around 2800rpm. That combined with the dodgy electronic throttle make for a bit of gear changing

even with a cable throttle and a custom tune it doesn't really pick up till after 2500 rpm...

though it'll still accelerate from as low as 1200rpm, even in 5th gear... (i've got a 5 speed behind mine)

i'd love to compare it to a manual ez36...

Hi,

The 3.0 is meant to be a cruiser motor, not a sports motor. Does the job well I think, but maybe that's because I never expected it to be fast.

maybe the ez30d... but the ez30r was made for more top end power...

why else would they have made a 3.0r-b?? the sports version of the gen4??

besides, as far as an NA motor goes, the 3.0 has a reasonably high specific output... mine would probably be putting out more than 200kw at the fly... that's the same as an NA 2l making 130kw at the fly

Hi,

If anyone buys a 3.0R-b or a 3.0R thinking they are sports cars then good luck to them.

I love my 3R, but that's because I live in the country, and the highway is where the motor shines. Low consumption, and easy overtaking.

Anyway, we digress. This thread is about the '10. I think the American styling has been toned down enough for me to like it. The Outback already looks like it's on stilts, so this is no shock. Will be interesting to see how the optioned models break down. Also the pryyyy?

Cheers,
Nik

Gawd, I hope the Liberty styling is much nicer.
It's not that bad, think I'd do a major overhaul on that grill though. And I agree with Walts22, needs BIGGERRR wheels. And anything on a spoiler there?

Re: 2010 Subaru Outback - 3.6L Flat Six Option

The new Liberty looks like rubbish.
It's awkward, it's lost the trademark hidden c pillars (wagon) and now looks just like any number of TOYOITSUAZDA variants. The 3.6 is weak at only 190kw, they've retained the rubbish 5 speed Aisin box and optioned the worst box ever invented (CVT) instead of keeping up with the play and giving us a DSG style box like VW / Mitsu or an excellent auto like Lexus and Ford (yes, not a spelling mistake..Ford)
I'm (obviously) bitterly disappointed that my MY07 RB is the last of the attractively styled Liberty's. I'm equally disappointed that I am leaving this marque due to the weak replacement model as I have found Subaru to be exceptionally reliable and a good-for-the-$ drive.
I pick up my new Passat R36 wagon tomorrow (like a number of Liberty faithfuls have when you read the forums)
Goodbye all and good luck, I'll probably return one day when the next replacement comes out (if they don't stuff that one up as well)

You won't have the Passat R36 wagon very long before you go back to Subaru.
