2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT

  Top of Page

The Mitsubishi Eclipse offers the sport coupe customer an "attainable exotic" with striking design, sports car handling and dazzling performance. For 2009, Mitsubishi restyled the front and rear bumper fascias and gave the Eclipse GT model a large rear spoiler. The GT also gets three significant upgrades for 2009: a new dual exhaust system yields a more powerful sound while also boosting horsepower to 265 (up from 263); standard high intensity discharge (HID) head lamps sharpen front styling and aid nighttime visibility, and standard Active Stability Control (ASC) enhances driving safety and performance.

Three new colors are available: Maizen Blue pearl, Quick Silver metallic and Solar, a vibrant new yellow. New interior cloth fabrics give all models a richer interior feel and appearance. The optional Sun & Sound package for GS model now includes aluminum pedals.

The GT's 265 hp 3.8-liter V-6 produces 262 lb.-ft. of peak torque and is teamed with a 6-speed manual transmission or optional 5-speed automatic. In both engines, Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) helps to optimize efficiency and power across a broad engine speed range. Both automatic transmissions feature Sportronicª shifters to allow manual gearshift control.

A rigid platform and 4-wheel independent suspension give the Eclipse sporty road manners and a compliant ride. All models are equipped with standard four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes (ABS) and electronic brake-force distribution (EBD); the GT features larger, ventilated rear discs and standard 18-inch alloy wheels.

The Eclipse interior combines exotic-looking design with comfort and safety, including standard advanced dual-stage front air bags, seat-mounted side air bags and front seat curtain side air bags. High-back front bucket seats feature integrated, open head restraints for a sporty look and enhanced rear visibility. The 50:50 split-folding rear seatbacks provide cargo versatility.

The available 650-watt (max.) Rockford-Fosgate Premium Audio system includes SIRIUSª Satellite Radio with a 6-month pre-paid subscription. The system combines AM/FM/CD/MP3 playback capability, PUNCH control, a six-disc, in-dash CD changer and a 10-in. subwoofer.

To be fair, every car looks like other cars nowadays. This is why marques like Mercedes are heading back to bold grille lines reminiscent of their fifties classics.

One of the boys in the office showed me the press release for this car the other day.
It is kinda cool. It would have been good if they fitted a turbo system of some sort to it big_smile

No need to apologise mate, It's not my cup of tea personally. Mainly because I doubt it will be bolted together with much quality, and with the news this week, will we even see this as a domestic car?

Many have made the Hyundai Coupe/Tiburon (F7?) comparison. Maybe they are scared that Hyundai's new RWD coupe will really be received by the global market that seem to be screaming for an affordable, sporty, RWD hatch/coupe...

I'm ready.

The First Engine Developed From the Ground Up by AMG

The SL63 AMG is powered by an AMG 6.3-liter V8 engine that features four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing, bucket tappets (rather than rocker arms) and a variable intake manifold. Sharing no parts with Mercedes-Benz V8 engines, the 6.3-liter engine was a completely autonomous development at AMG.

Built almost completely from a high-strength silicon-aluminum alloy, the cylinder bores make use of a twin-wire-arc-sprayed (TWAS) coating, a process that results in impressively low friction and running surfaces that are twice as hard as conventional cast-iron cylinders.

The 6.3-liter engine block boasts an especially rigid bedplate acting as the overall support of the main bearings (similar to a one-piece set of main bearing caps), cast-in steel reinforcements and a sturdy closed-deck layout in the cylinder head area. The high-flow intake and exhaust ports form a vertical straight line, helping the 6.3 AMG engine rev freely to more than 7,000 rpm, yet the highly flexible AMG engine still produces nearly 90 percent of its peak torque at only 2,000 rpm.

A finely balanced crankshaft with six counterweights spins in five main crankshaft bearings. The crankshaft counterweights feature heavy metal plugs – a detail usually found only in racing engines – which means they can be significantly smaller, increasing power by reducing rotational inertia and oil drag.

Each forged connecting rod is precisely “cracked” with the help of a laser beam, so the irregular fracture contributes to its strength when the two halves are clamped around the crankshaft. The connecting rods and lightweight pistons are matched for extremely close weight tolerances that contribute to smooth running at high speeds. Small nozzles in the engine block spray cooling oil onto the underside of each piston crown.

Re: 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT

AMG = Nice, although in a recent press release I received the other day they have claimed that they are no longer looking to out-perform all of the competition (Audi are set to put out an engine which tops the 450Kw V12 AMG) they are instead looking to make the engines run cleaner and more efficient as far as fuel goes. They will of course along the way make small power hikes but apperently nothing dramatic will come of this.

The way that they crack the con rod caps is cool... the first time I seen it I was "OMGWTFBBQ LASER PEW PEW PEW" very impressed, BMW now use this technique in a few of their engines such as the Twin turbo 6 Diesel engine, it apparently increases the strength of the bearing caps dramatically big_smile

At this stage the car is going to be FWD, but as mentioned, likely that AWD GS-X variant will be on its way a bit further down the track.

I'd say 100% of us, as this car is a USDM vehicle (US built, in fact), and AFAIK, there is no right hand drive variant.

Very true, but you never know, I mean that 2004 Galant you quoted from WiKi is pretty much what we call a 380. I've no idea where Mitsu are heading over here.

You also make a valid point.

Perhaps more JDM vehicles to begin with? I could live with that...
