08 Rex Unveiling @ STI Docklands

  Top of Page

Well, from what i gathered, it was a flop of a promo.  Bill Woods MC'ing and special guests Cody Croker and Dean Herridge.  No photos attached as it was prohibited since its not official unveilled until Sept (hatch).  STI variant in 1st quart next year and the sedans this time next year.

When the hatch was unvielled, was nothing but silence.   Clearly looks aimed at the average jo.  IMO, looks like a Mazda3 and Lanos..... :suicide:  There were a few chuckles about, and even murmours of "I'll take the liberty.".  big_smile  Don't think it impressed those proud rex owners.

They had an STI Lib there also which attracted quite alot of attention, with Graham gloating. wink

Technically, numbers are good but they lose the 4-pot brakes, opting for 2-pot.  Their main focus, so it was promo'd, was on safety, ride and handling.  After all the mumbo jumbo, Cody and Dean took em for a fang on the skidpan with some donuts.  Overall, think it was dud of a night.

I wonder if the reaction will be the same from people handing over their hard earned.
Does anybody know what the sales figures and model breakdown is for the Impreza currently? Eg. how many STI, WRX, RX, GX were sold.
I always thought Subaru attracted a different demographic, more sports oriented market.
They are going to be pushing sh1t uphill educating people about their new ideology unless they blanket advertise this new model to death. So get ready to see heaps of this POS on TV and billboards. That said, they may not sell many and won't have the budget to keep advertising, which will force an early redesign just like the bug-eye '01 WRX. It won't happen overnight but it will happen.

Soooo.... They kept the same engine, drivetrain etc, no increase in power, and smaller brakes?

Sounds like an awsome deal

I agree Fatcat, my image of a Rex is sporty etc.  But imo, its just another average car on the road now with a bonnet scoop.  This being said, with their new "styles", it may attrach a larger market and hence, increase sales; who knows.  Perhaps they trying to get rid of their hoon image they have.  :Dntknw:

They opted to go with the 5-speed box, saying its more suited for the Rex rather than the 6-speed, dunno about the STI tho.  They improved suspension etc to give better grip/handling/ride.  Their 'research' says the 2-pot's braking is just as good as their 4-pot....  :mda:   Didn't pay much attention to the others.....

Impressive was low-down torque, torque starts at 1600rpm and hits 200nm at 2000rpms, peaking at 3800rpm.

I loved the initial post comment of people rather taking a liberty!

This appears to be a cost cutting exercise. no more four pots. no more 6 speed. bland styling. marginal power increase.

Perhaps the market will really start to sway towards Mitsubishi, and everyone will start to drive EVO's.

Sad really.

Has the 08' Liberty got the bigger bonnet scoop, like in those spy photos.

If it does, I am getting on of those bonnets to fit my car.

The wrx never had a 6-speed, on the sti had that, and I dare say that it will still have a 6-speed.

I can see what they are saying with the 4 pots.
I didn't notice that bigger increase going from the 294mm 2 pots to the 294mm 4 pots.

Lets hope the same designer doesn't do the lib!

The scoop on the Legacy spy shot screams "Look at me!"

I wish they'd just wake up to the fact that a FMIC is always going to s**t on a TMIC due to heat soak and install them at the factory rather then leave it to the aftermarket crowd.

haha i had a big smile on my face when i heard that too. smile

the scoop is similiar, if not identical to the B4.  The diameter of the brake rotors are larger than the 07 and with a larger Master cyclinder or somsh1t?  which they say gives it the same braking power as the 4-pot.

Evo's aren't really the same price range as a stocker WRX.. Maybe everyone will start buying MR lancers and ricing the shiz out of them?

If your talking Legacy Mule, nah - definately not - compare that pic to your own B4 avatar pic.

It's very similar to a WRX STI scoop though IMO.

Oh my bad, thought it was querying new Rex's scoop...

But yeah, it does seem like an STI scoop.  Seems they changed the scoops around for the new Rex/Legacy....

There was a preview night that was put on a few nights ago by Subaru Aus. for the Rex owners club of NSW and Rexnet held out at Eastern Creek

Most of the Rexnetters said it's alright - still butt ugly, too much plastic (apparenty under the bonnet theres a ton of it) and damn quiet. One of them even said it sounded like it could have been an electric car, even when being thrashed on the skid pan...

They're obviously trying to target a larger market with a more generic, comfortable, "finished" car.. but in doing so, I think they've ruined everything the rex ever was..

Some of the rexnet guys hit the nail on the head when they said - What they've always loved about the rex is the fact that it is rough, unfinished, fairly economy styled, it does rattle and its a drivers car...

I dunno, certainly hasnt won me over in the slightest and highly doubt it ever will..

Misubishi is rumored to be releasing a WRX equivalent with the new EVO X. A half EVO so to speak.

that aint no rumour, it's the equivilant to the wrx like the sti is to the evo. slightly less power etc etc. fair to say subaru won't have much of a market in not too distant future. or a completely different one at least

Its a GSR. A car they shouldn't have every dropped. They haul and will munch a rex to bits so it'll be good to see less rexes on the road.

the new rex is an abortion and i hope every last one burns in hell.

Having said that i would stll rather see a Subaru badge coming down the road than some riced up POS lancer.

Paul, I like you, but you've got NFI. The EVO is a fuken ballistic missile and isn't ugly either. Last year I almost traded my B4 for an EVO9 but the trade in price I got was sh1t so I didn't do it. I am seriously considering placing a deposit on an EVOX and trading the Forester.
I will not even consider the new STI as it stirred my loins as much as looking at a 90 year old nude woman.

Have to agree, I'm a big fan of the EVO however I think mitsu has gone off track a bit with the new one just like Subaru. The Evo X front end looks too much like a guppy mouth for me. Evo IX on the other hand... :new_russi

I almost came when I saw the spy shots and mock pics of the EVOX. I think is is a huge step forward. Looks agressive and is directed at the target market, whereas the new Impreza is ..........well.............fuked.
